One of the interesting things about rewatching Miranda, which I am doing, is that my perspective on Gary/Miranda is very different this time around.
First time I watched, I assumed that it would be a My So-Called Life "plain girl moons over hunk until he's bound to notice her" thing, and so that was how I watched it, assuming that Stevie was right about how Gary didn't see Miranda in a sexual light.
This time around, paying attention to what's actually going on his end, it's obvious that Gary is quite into Miranda right from the start. His very first "Miranda? Hiii!" shows that he's thrilled to see her, and in the pilot episode, he's the one asking her out, twice. Sure, he hurries to point out that "it's not a date," but he also comes back to her flat after the first date, and when that's a fiasco, asks her out again. By the second episode, he's leaning into that would-be kiss just as much as she is.
It's true that he doesn't put as much weight on the relationship that she does, but then, she puts a lot of weight on it. He's clearly attracted, although he's somewhat put off (at first) by Miranda's strange behaviour, and he's not as self-assured that his good looks would have you believe.
This of course only serves to make an already lovely ship even lovelier. :-)
