So, in other things that have happened, my brother gave me a belated birthday present when we were in Denmark. Apparently he'd gone into The Pocket Bookstore, which carries genre paperbacks and comics, and asked for a gift to his sister who "is involved in Fantastisk Filmfestival and likes trashy American TV shows." I don't know if those were his exact words, but that's what he told me he'd said. (Which, hey! I also like trashy British TV shows!)
The store clerk clearly knew his job, because he handed over Creature Tech by Doug TenNapel, and oh dear, it's glorious.
This is the front flap blurb:
"Good battles Evil, and the world hangs in the balance! Resurrected by the Shroud of Turin, the zombified Dr. Jameson intends to finish what he started 150 years ago - destroying the earth with a giant space eel. Standing in his way is Dr. Ong, a would-be pastor turned scientist who now works in a government research facility infamously known as 'Creature Tech.' Aided by an unlikely cast of rednecks, symbiotic aliens, and a CIA-trained mantid, Dr. Ong embarks on a journey of faith, love, and self-discovery. All in a day's work at Creature Tech!"
Not all front flap blurbs are accurate, but this one is - the rest of the book is exactly like that. And it's just as fabulous a piece of crack that you'd expect. It also has some occasional serious, heartfelt moments to make it more than just a series of gags, but mainly I just like it because it has lines like, "Mother necessity! The giant space eel approaches! At last my plan for vengeance comes to fruition!"
