Valhalla nods to Muppets, Conan, and of course Thor

My collected edition of Valhalla albums 1-3 has arrived, and I'm loving it immensely. If I ever get a scanner, I'm very tempted to make a scanlation of Thor's Bridal Journey, because it's just as awesome as I remember.

Meanwhile, I couldn't help uploading some popular culture nods that Madsen & co threw in:

Band: She is so yo-oung and so adooooorable...

In Oden's Wager, Oden is upset that the valkyries can't find him good warriors, and he wagers that he can do it better himself. Unfortunately, there's something wrong with all the warriors he finds: They're too young, or too stupid, or too Christian, or too much in love... or too insubordinate, like this one:

1.
Boss: Go get 'em, boys! WATCH YOUR BACKS! PUMMEL THEM, MURDUR!

Oden: A battle! That might be something.

2.
Boss: Jump at him! He's still breathing!
Crush the mob, Murdur!

Oden: Yes, this is something...

Sitting guy #1: It's a pretty good thing he's with us, isn't it?

Sitting guy #2: Yeah.

3.
Opponent #1: Cut and run!

Opponent #2: Abandon battlefront!

Opponent #3: Home, my friends! Duty calls!

Opponent #4: Leave while the party's going!

4.
Boss: We squished them good, didn't we, Murdur? But what's that?

Survivors: We're here to ask your lordship for mercy on behalf of our lordship

Boss: Say what?

5.
Boss: We take no beggars! CRUSH THEM, MURDUR! Kick their asses! Finish them!

6.
Murdur: No, lord king! Serve you with my sword I will do, but such nithing's work does not please me!

Bystander: Now - THAT'S a hero.

7.
Boss: WHAT? Are you talking back, Murdur? I'm in charge here! CRUSH THEM!

8.
Murdur: You crush them...

9.
Oden: No thanks, I have no use for such refractory elements in Asgård...

He has better luck later on, when he spots a blond warrior single-handedly fighting off six men, and is introduced to his two friends:

1.
Oden: If you have friends nearby - why didn't you call them?

Warrior: Why? There were only six of them...

2.
Oden: I don't suppose your friends are like you.

3.
Warrior: No...

4.
Warrior: They're a pair of tough thugs...

5.
Oden: Really? How many are you?

Warrior: Three.

6.
Warrior: My name is FANDER...

7.
Warrior/Fander: Over there is HOGUR...

8.
Fander: ...and that's VOLDSDAG. We call him "Muddly".

9.
Oden: And I am... Oden - KING OF THE GODS!

10.
Fander: Oh...

Voldsdag: Whaddya know...

Hogur: Well, hail on you, then...

1.
Oden: I offer all three of you a place by my side in the hall of the Einherjar... Come with me to VALHALLA!

2.
Fander: Well... I was going home, really. What do you guys say?

3.
Voldsdag: VALHALLA? Yeah, we've never been, actually...

4.
Hogur: What about Byzans? We've never been there either.

5.
Hogur: We get to Asgård anyway, sooner or later...

Oden: ...B...but it's a great honour to you...

6.
Fander: That's true, of course. But on the other hand, we haven't been to Byzans...

7.
Oden: THAT'S ENOUGH! I am the god of Death, and you're coming whether you want to or not!!

8.
Oden: LET'S GO!

Hogur: Well, if you put it that way...

9.
So it happened that Oden returned with his three warriors...

But when Oden brings the Warriors Three to Valhalla, he's in for a surprise. :-)

1.
Oden: Have you seen what father has brought to you?

Guard: You lost the bet, good people! Gimme!

2.
Oden: I have proved that I could find...

3.
Voldsdag, Fander and Hogur/Thor, Balder and Loke: ASGÅRD'S THREE GREATEST WARRIORS!

Betters: Oh, did we? Give us!

Valkyries: AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

5.
Balder: Eeh, welcome home, father... This was the only way to get you home...

6.
Loke: We have to remember...

7.
Loke: That there are no greater warriors than Oden and his sons...

8.
Oden: Let that be a lesson. Asgård's gods are the greatest warriors!

9.
Valkyrie #1: Eh... what?

Valkyrie #2: Did you catch that, Brunhilde?

Valkyrie #3: You know him...

Valkyrie #4: Er... that... that's true...

So, there you have it. Some of the many, many reasons I grinned like a crazy person re-reading this book.
