worn out by tech trouble

So, my computer has been giving me all kinds of trouble lately (probably related to the time it spend in a freezing cold moving van), and since I'm now working full time I haven't got the time to get it sent in for repairs, not to mention that part of the problem is that it's now reeeeeallllly slooooow in things like making backup, and backup would be nice to have if I'm to send the computer in for repairs.

Well. Meanwhile, I'm going stir crazy because another part of the problem is that sound and video is messed up, so I can't watch any films. So I figured I'd start at another end and go buy a new DVD player instead of the one that broke last year. Since I buy DVDs from all over the place, the #1 requirement is that the region hack not be too difficult. Everything else is waaaaay secondary.

Yesterday, I tried a store in town. They had no idea what I meant by "region". They had no idea what I meant by "Amazon". They didn't think any of that would work with their DVD players.

Today, I decided to try OnOff, which seemed to lie close to my job, judging by the map.

...Yeah. First of all, I need to learn that whole thing about scale. Turns out that the thing "close to my job" is a gigantic mall area, with roads crisscrossing it in every direction and hardly anywhere to go for pedestrians. Also, now with all the snow, I can't even see the pedestrian paths. It took me an hour to get to the right store, and by then I was wet to my knees because what I thought was a shortcut turned out to be a ditch covered in snow.

The girl in the store went back to ask her colleague (who didn't come out to talk to me personally, which I probably should have insisted on, in hindsight). She said that they don't do region hacks in store anymore, but that it should work with any of their players.

Great, said I, and picked a random player that looked good (LG BD550, combined with BluRay which I don't really need, but what the heck). I even agreed to get an OnOff card, because there are quite a few electrical machines I want to buy when my economy allows it, so why not?

On the way back, two buses passed me because I wasn't running fast enough for their liking (on icy ground), so that took me pretty long too. When I got home, I chucked the wet clothes in the machine, but on some legwarmers and slippers, and logged on (to my slooow computer) to find the hacks for my new player.

You guessed it. I can't find any hacks for the fucking LG BD550.

Satans helvetes jävla skit!

The only upside is that I haven't opened the box, so I could, in theory, take the player back to the store and ask for another model, preferably sold by someone who knows what the fuck they're talking about. (It's not like I had a long list of requirements. As long as I can play my imports, I don't care about anything else.)

That's the theory. In practice, I feel about ready to lie down and cry.
