movies seen: 48 Shades

I've now seen 48 Shades, a sweet and likeable and pretty inconsequential film. Every part of it worked well - acting, dialogue, looks - but I kept waiting for a point that pretty much never showed.

The story is as follows: Dan is a senior in high school, and is going to live this year with his mom's much-younger sister Jacq and her roommate Naomi. Dan develops a bit of a crush on Naomi, though he figures he shouldn't do anything about that (though his friend disagrees). The girls arrange a party during which things happen - if not, admittedly, a whole lot of things. Also, Dan has an essay to write about Romeo and Juliet and opts to write about the fish tank scene from the Baz Luhrmann film.

That's pretty much it. It's very slice-of-life, and there are certainly worse ways to spend an hour and a half, but also better ways.

The most fun part of it for me was seeing how different the characters played by Loved Ones actors were from their parts in that film. Richard Wilson is a kind boy-next-door type. Victoria Thaine is a socially awkward, drunken girl at the party. And Robin McLeavy is this (the dark-haired girl, for those of you who haven't seen TLO):

If you think, "Hm, this looks like a cool college girl who plays in a band, takes good care of her nephew without actually trying to be an adult, and has quite significant lesbian leanings," you would be absolutely right. It took me about a minute to forget about Lola, and another minute to be utterly smitten.

Also, Jacq would like to apologize for the whole Lola thing. Apology:

There. All better. And I have yet another new icon.
