Day 21 - Favorite ship (Really day 22, since I missed yesterday, but never mind)
Jake Foley/Diane Hughes, Jake 2.0
morthel accused me once of being an "egosexual", and she may have a point, because boy do I ever see myself in these two.
Let's start with Jake, the titular character of the show. He's your average geek computer tech, working at the NSA, until the day he has an accident with some liquid nanobots and ends up gaining a shitload of superpowers. As you do. Jake thinks having superpowers is OMGAWESOME until he realizes that a bunch of people are willing to kill him to get to them, if the nanobots inside his body don't kill him first (they've never been tested on humans and are a tad unreliable). Then he's understandably peeved. The NSA calm him down by making him a spy, because what use is a high-tech superhero if you can't make him a high-tech superhero spy?
Now, geek-turned-superhero is a classic story, but Jake is different - primarily because it feels like the writers may have actually met a geek at some point. It's not just shorthand for "can't talk to girls." In fact, Jake's geekitude has some benefits in his new work area, since part of his power is to interact with computers. His fish-out-of water moments actually feel believable, as do his more heroic stunts.
Also, he's played by Christopher Gorham, and quite frequently gets shirtless. What else do you need?
A woman like that.
Which is where Diane comes in. Because the original creator of the nanobots was an evil traitor who was killed in the same situation where Jake got his superpowers, nobody really knows how the nanobots work. Diane comes the closest, since she worked on the project. Hence, she's Jake's new physician, and when she's not taking his shirt off, she works out ways to make the nanobots less lethal.
She's smart, and a bit flustered, and comes off as a shy little wallflower right up to the point where she saves Jake's life (repeatedly), or tells him off for being an idiot (again, repeatedly), or does any of the other low-key awesome things that make her hold her own against jaded spy people like Lou and Kyle. (Lou and Kyle are not involved in this ship, which means that they're not involved in this post. Unfortunately, because they're awesome.)
Also, she's played by Keegan Connor Tracy, and doesn't get shirtless nearly enough.
Because Jake and Diane are both mild-mannered geeks in a spy environment, and because they're forced together by circumstances, and because they're both FREAKING ADORABLE, they become friends. Very close friends. With the UST practically exploding the screen.
For the first few episodes, there was a red herring called Sarah whom Jake was in love with. This was rather pointless, since Sarah didn't know about the nanites (designated love interests aren't allowed to participate in the plot), wasn't a geek, didn't really have anything in common with Jake and wasn't that into him. There wasn't anything wrong with Sarah, but there was absolutely nothing for her to do in the show, and fortunately the writers realized that and wrote her out, leaving more room for the Jake/Diane story to unfold.
I was going to talk about the various high points of their UST, but this post is already quite long, and besides, it's all rather spoilery. (Ep 14!!!) So let me just end by repeating ADORABLE! and pointing out that
there seem to be eps to see streaming online. Oh, and the whole thing is just 16 eps long. See it!
