Goodbye Ugly Betty! Thank you for going out with a sparkly, wonderful bang rather than with a whimper. These past few episodes have been great. I find myself humming
Renee Olstead and
Macy Gray and being really, really happy.
Thank you America for making Betty so very real! I've been thinking lately about what separates a quirky show from an overquirky show for me, and it truly is that realness. (See also Dead Like Me vs. Pushing Daisies, or due South vs. The Middleman - with the caveat that I haven't seen enough of the latter shows in each example to know if my assessment is unfair.) As Silvio da Horta so succinctly put it: "She has incredible instincts, not just for her character, but for what this show was. Her greatest strength is her vulnerability. That's what people respond to in this character, someone who's relatable and real. The braces and glasses were iconic, but they would've been nothing, a gag, if it wasn't for her realness. She's wonderful; she's great. She's a part of my life."
And thank you show for so
thoroughly rewarding me for making Justin my favourite way back in season 1. I hope Mark Indelicato will proceed to new and greater triumphs; he deserves it.
