In my defence, this post is only tangentially related to Sherlock Holmes.
I read a
very gushing LJ review of the film, which among many other things mentioned that Law's Watson is a total BAMF (agreed) and that the sword-cane is... well, the word she used was "guh", but I think it translates to what I tend to call "awesome". Again, agreed.
At the top of the review, there's the movie poster, and... well, just look at the way he wields that thing, across the shoulders, with that arrogant head-tilt. That is massively sexy.
Now, my dad is very fond of canes. He's got one with a dragon's head and one with a lion's head, both of which the kids find very fascinating. They can't turn into swords, but pose with one of them and you still have a pretty good chance of looking like a BAMF. (Or
a complete nutter, but of course that depends on what else you wear.) He also carves canes out of various branches he encounters on forest trips. I think there are about ten of those at home and as many more in Hjelmseryd (which is where most of those forest trips take place). Short canes, tall canes, slim canes, thick canes, straight canes, knobbly canes - great for playing with, and with a very good to moderate chance of badassery.
Meanwhile, when I busted my knee in April,
what I got was this. Which is pretty standard these days. They're infinitely more functional - well, unless you mean to go into a swordfight. But they're also butt ugly. Wield one of those, and you don't look like a BAMF, you look like
a cranky patient.
Of course, this was a temporary, standard model sort of thing. I'm sure for more permanent measures,
you get something much more... No. I'm sorry. That's still ugly. Bright colours are NOT PRETTY. Looking at those things, I feel like when I was shown a selection of sex toys at a home sales party and everything looked either waaaay too realistic or like a fucking candy cane. Can we have "aesthetically pleasing" for 200, please?
But to be fair, these are crutches. Let's see what's in the market for actual canes.
Okay, now we're talking. They don't have dragon heads (though there is one with
a snake skin pattern), and they certainly can't be turned into a sword, but you do stand a pretty good chance of looking like a BAMF with them. Now, if only those were standard models...
Dear hospitals. When selling aids, do keep in mind functionality and price, of course, but also please consider general badassery.
That is all.
