A friend of mine emailed me today saying, "Hey, maybe we could see SH together" and I had to reply that unfortunately, I was already going to see it and the tickets had been bought. Now, I've emailed her again to say "YES, LET'S." Because I could SOVERYMUCH see this again. (I'm just afraid of getting her hopes up so maybe she doesn't like it.)
I've been peeking at SH LJ comms, now, and am amused that for all the critics' complaining, most SH fans seem to like this film. :-)
Also, I WANT FIC LIKE WHOAH. And vids. And art. And MOREOFEVERYTHING.
That's because the critics aren't SH fans -- they're people who vaguely remember Basil Rathbone movies. That's my impression anyway!
Yeah, that's what I gather. I mean, even I knew the deerstalker isn't mentioned in the books. :-)
I have a friend who is reluctant to see it because she likes the Jeremy Brett version so much. As the expert, what's your verdict on that? Can she still safely see it, or will she hate it?
Okay, thanks! That gives me a lot more information. I'll have to talk to her about it before I know whether I can recommend it or not. I know that when we saw Romeo + Juliet as teens, I was blown away and she hated it, so I think she's generally more of a purist than I am.
Oh, and House/Wilson is Holmes/Watson in so obvious a way that they aren't even trying to hide it. House even lives at no. 221B.
Yeah, technically I knew that, it was just so VERY obvious with this film. (Though the limp is on the other guy, as it were.) Same with Psych, I always knew it was slightly Holmesian in tone, but I never realized just how Holmesian.
Have you seen the old SH TV series with Jeremy Brett from the late 80s - early 90s? I've been watching a few eps of it sort of in preparation. It's quite good, obviously not as spectacular as this film, but very true to the books (what I've read of them), Brett is a wonderful Holmes, and the Greg House template is so obvious it burns. ^^ Exactly the same kind of gloriously exasperating manners and socially inept brilliance. And they don't shy away from the drug abuse, either; it's all there.
No, seriously, I'm such a Holmes virgin. I've read a couple of the short stories, and done fandom research, but I've never seen - or at least never consciously remembered - any adaptations.
Well, they might look a bit pale watched *after* the film, but if you are interested I can pass on the eps I have (first two series so far, old video rips but not too bad, and they are British so only about 6-8 eps per series.) The Holmes/Watson chemistry is great, too -- obviously not as slashy as in the film XD, but it's made me laugh out loud several times.
To be honest, Jude Law does the coolest and most awesome Watson ever. I think that the chemistry between him and RDJr is so great that it can't help but shine. He's never impressed me much before, either, but here he is just... perfect.
And were we in the same film theatre again? I just saw the 18.10 show...

Btw, concerning Watsons, this comic really cracked me up. Have you read it?
