rambling on about SJA, Miriam Makeba, and all sorts of things

I just finished watching the latest Sarah Jane Adventures ep. Oh, show, how I love you. How I love everything about you. I love what you did with Clyde, and with his family, and I love Luke and Rani, and Maria and Alan YAY! and how Maria already knew about Rani and was friendly to her, and the hee! of Rani calling Alan a geek, and the ow! of Clyde calling Luke a freak, and the ending, and EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU. You pwn my heart.

axa, I need to sit you down and force you to watch this show. Never mind the first season Slitheen, it's still better than s1 of Torchwood, and the second season is SO BEAUTIFUL.

For once, the newspaper told me something my flist hadn't already, namely that Miriam Makeba has died. This makes me sad. Not very sad, because she was 76 and that's a respectable age, but kind of sad because she was awesome. Here, flist, have some Pata Pata. I strongly recommend that you watch more of her songs on YouTube and make this a proper vigil.

Ms. Makeba, you'll live in our hearts.

Speaking of the newspaper, my parents' newspaper have a Sunday cartoonist called Peter Jönsson who is generally great, and this Sunday was no exception. Sadly I don't have the strip itself, nor do I remember it exactly, but it was roughly like this:

First panel: Obama seen from behind as he's standing on a podium in front of a crowd. One person shouts "We love you, Barack!" Another shouts, "You will save our great country!"

Second panel, the crowd's smiles go wider: "You will put an end to the war in Iraq!" "Stop global warming!" "Save our economy!" "End world hunger!"

Third panel, the crowd now have toothy, wild-eyed grins and the panel is filling up with speech bubbles, among which: "Save the whales!" "Higher pay!" "Better TV shows!" "Happier bus drivers!" "Forbid Let's Dance!" "Cure my warts!"

Fourth panel: Obama, still seen from behind is sitting in his office, speaking on the phone. "Hi, John. About that president gig... are you still interested?"

Finishing up, I have some questions for the Americans on my flist, for no particular reason except my own curiosity.

Question #1 (I may have asked this before, but if so, I've forgotten the answer): Since flag-burning is such a controversial topic - what do you do with flags when they can't be used anymore? Because around here, once a flag is tattered you're supposed to burn it.

Question #2: Is it possible to get an E in school? There are all these shows where kids get A, B, C, D, or F, but I can't remember any instance of someone gettting an E.

Question #3 (this is really for Anglost in general): What's up with the name Claire? There are so very many characters called Claire/Clare: Claire Bennet, Claire Fraser, Clare Huxtable, Claire Allen, Claire Meade, Clare Abshire, Claire Littleton... not to mention all of these people. Is it really that common a name in English-speaking countries? I know some actresses of that name too, but not a single person IRL - and only one woman called Klara, which I guess would be the Swedish equivalent.
