I buy good quality shoes due to a foot problem, and while I can't do it often, because my shoe wardrobe has expanded, the good shoes last a long time, like 10-15 years. So don't lose hope. Just invest in good, classic shoes as you are able to afford them, and remember to switch out which ones you wear, so one pair doesn't wear out.

My shoes tend to wear out fast since I shuffle my feet. (My previous pair of spring-and-winter shoes wore out in a couple of years.) And my pants tend to wear out because I like to sit with my legs in a pretzel. (I currently have three non-broken pair of pants, and one pair are slightly too small. *sigh*) I try to get rid of these habits, but it's hard, since I don't tend to think much about what my body does.

I switch shoes when the weather changes, and that's about it. *g* Of my eight pairs, three are indoors only. As for affording them... I can't. Period. I can't even afford the ones I do buy.

The older I get, the more important comfortable shoes become! I used to go through shoes so fast that I'd only spend my money on the cheapest that I could find, but as it turned out, it was better value for me to buy one pair of properly fitted docs than to go through five or six pairs of budget shoes.

I tend to slip out of shoes if they don't fit right, since my feet are so thin and I refuse to fit my toes into pointy shoes, so I got used to being persnickety. And comfortable soles are simply a must. :-) I mostly go for ecco and vagabond and that sort of thing.
