lesbian movie time!

jadelennox and I had one of those fun conversation that started with yuletide and moved on to the etymology of mazel tov, the number of religious vs. sexual curses in Sweden, the use of the word "fucking" in a movie title, said movie, and gay rights in Sweden vs. the US. (We win, yay! OTOH, that's not exactly hard.)

Anyway. The conversation made me want to show her the movie in question, that is to say, Fucking Åmål, AKA Show Me Love for those of you who aren't Swedish.

And lo and behold, they have it on YouTube in eight subtitled parts. Just search for fucking english subtitles and there it is.

There are plenty of good reasons to see this film.

1) The girls in the film were major queer rolemodels for my generation and the one right after.
2) It has been given awards all over the world.
3) It has a 94% approval rate at Rotten Tomatoes.
4) Even though it opened in Swedish box office in October, it outgrossed all other films in Swedish cinemas in 1998 except Titanic and Armageddon.
5) It has some of the best portrayals of teenagers I've seen ever, and very few villains of any kind.
6) Though it's a cheap point: can you really resist a movie about teenage Swedish lesbians in love?

Reasons not to see this film:

1) Not everyone likes the gritty, slightly shaky cinematography of this thing.
2) It's in Swedish. But hey, subtitles.

Watch it. Or if you're not sure it's your thing, start with the first clip. It's only eleven minutes. Actually, the whole film is less than 90 minutes, so it's not like it'll take forever. ;-)
