Busy Saturday! I ran around town for hours. First I picked up three pairs of glasses because I couldn't decide in the store. (In my head, I've dubbed them "nice girl", "career bitch" and "culture lady". All three of them are pretty, but I'm just not sure which I'd prefer. *g*) Then I had lunch with my mom. Then I bought some presents to people. Then my brother and his kid decided to show up, which meant mom and I had to hurry, because some of those presents were for him. Then we all went home and had supper together. I tried to get some sleep before supper, but it's very hard when a one-and-a-half-year-old keeps asking "Ta-ina?" every time I leave his sight. I swear that kid gets cuter every time I see him.

I told my family about the Welsh wank, which led to the following... uh... interesting conversation:

Dad: Well, the Welsh people are mostly miners, so what with the dust and all they end up black anyway.

Brother: Dirt-negroes!

Me: Yeah, I don't think that's a word we'll be using any time soon.

Broher: Why not? It's completely value-neutral. "Hello, I'm a dirt-negro!"

Me: You know, a guy over at Ordkonst used "alibi negro" about black characters thrown into shows just to be black. (Yup, there's no word in Swedish for token character.)

Brother: Ah, like the alibi girl in an action show, or the alibi four-eye - who, if he ever finds a girl, must immediately lose the glasses.

Me: Well, duh. You can't kiss with glasses!

Mom: Yes, you can.

Me: Yeah, I know. Done it kind of a lot.

Brother: You can't kiss with noses either. *mimicks trying to move his face around an imaginary nose.* Uhhh... how do you do it?

It's always nice to get home and have some familiar insanity after all that unfamiliar insanity of fandom.

The TV critic at local paper Sydsvenskan totally dissed Supernatural in today's paper:

"Supernatural" premiered on SVT Monday, and it must be a mistake. SVT's buyers usually have a better eye than that. This is a dime-a-dozen show that doesn't measure up, with cheap horror effects, loud screaming, blood spurting and model-pretty actors who completely without subtext deliver the usual cynical lines and jokes.

I may have to kill him.

Joking aside, the worst part is that I can kind of get his point. It just feels so irrelevant somehow. For some reason, plot quality is only tangential to whether or not a show will click for me. It's more about the characters, and not even if they're "complex" enough, just if I can care. Ordinary people don't always seem all that complex either. But I honestly can't explain it.

I do get a niggling thought that "subtext" means something completely different to him than it means to me - and no, I don't mean in the sexual sense. I have a very hard time caring about characters as symbols or metaphors or whatever; they can be incredibly well-done and I still won't care. In contrast, I can admit that Dean and Sam aren't always that well written, but somehow I still care about them as people, and I want to find out all those things about them that we haven't learned yet.

*sigh* Nope, can't articulate it properly.

May finally have started getting an idea for yuletide, though I fear it will be short and kind of fluffy. Also, I don't have access to the canon source yet for a couple of weeks, unless I buy it, so that's a bit complicated.

I should probably write one of those letters to my santa, but I can't think of anything to say. "You don't have to follow my wishes if you don't have to"? But that's already in the rules. I only made specific wishes because I know it's easier for some people to write if they have something to start with. And honestly, I don't care - I want fic with those chars, and preferably good fic, but I've found that you can never figure out what people will write anyway, and I haven't been disappointed yet. It's sort of a "you don't know what you want until you get it" thing. :-)

Also managed to get a title for my John fic - a line from a song, hardly unusual. But then, I hate coming up with titles, they're even worse than summaries, so I'm glad I have one. Now I'm just waiting for the story itself to come back from the beta process. Kind of like waiting for Christmas.
