tv talk and stuff like that

Still discovering the joys of my new computer. Had my first major setback when I tried to download a torrent file - after about 200mb, the speed pretty much trickled down to a halt (single bytes per second). So much for playing about with vidding. Perhaps I should do my experiments with easily downloaded stuff (DW, short DLM clips) or stuff I already have on VCD (Firefly, Jake 2.0). Problem is that the main idea I have is Cordelia. Of course, I already own most of Cordy's eps (just not s3 BtVS) so I guess I could rip source from the DVDs, but but reading the guides on how to do that basically just makes me want to commit harakiri. I hate user manuals, especially in English. (Most of the stuff I've actually learned to do online, I've just plodded about with until I reached the result I wanted.)

Anyway, there are so many other lovely things about this computer that I refuse to let that bother me. Much.

One upside is that VLC works much better on this computer, meaning I can see the new DW eps and not just the old ones. Hence, I've finally seen the season finale.

You know, that could have been a really happy ending for Rose. Her family is reunited, her boyfriend has turned from zero to hero (even if I suspect he's doing Jake on the side), and she gets to have a job in which she saves the earth, which is always fun.

Trouble is, none of that matters if she's going to spend her new life moping over the Doctor. I would have liked it so much if she had made the choice to leave herself, or failing that, if she had been shown to be okay with it. That whole star-crossed lovers thing really doesn't do anything for me.

It's also a bit sad to lose Jackie as well as Mickey (though I guess Mickey in a sense was already lost). So many recurring chars in one blow... *sigh* It was great fun to see Mickey and the alt!boys again, though, and I much liked Jackie's kiss with the Doctor (and the Doctor's reaction). Also nice was alt!Pete's insistence that Jackie isn't his wife, because, well, she isn't.

I do think it was a mistake to hold off the replacement companion for next season - that way, she's really going to feel like a replacement. It would have been better if the companions could have overlapped a bit, to make for a smooth transition. But then, I get the feeling that RTD thinks there can only be one "real" companion. Which is a bit silly. (I still firmly think that three is the ideal number of companions.)

It was a fairly nice double-ep all in all, lots of good little moments. I liked the pissing contest between the Dalek and the Cybermen even though I don't really care about either group of villains on their own. (Am sacrilegous that way. Also can't see what makes Tom Baker so special for traditionalists. I kind of like Patrick Troughton.)

About the earlier eps I haven't talked about before, I kind of loved the Impossible Planet for the good guest stars (Ida in particular) and the sheer claustrophobia of it. The Satan Pit kind of ruined the deal with the big monster, though. Big monsters aren't scary. Fear Me was nice but had me distracted by Nina Sosanya's prettiness, while Love and Monsters and The Idiot's Lantern were largely meh. (TIL would actually have been okay if it hadn't been for the horrid overacting by the man playing the father.)

I guess now I'll have to fill my DW needs with more old eps... maybe those discs Tammy sent me will finally play.

I have also started watching Rome, which may very well become a fandom of mine. (I've only seen four eps, and over three days, so it isn't yet.) Nice plotting, though I'm not entirely sure all the sex and gore is necessary. Also, a bit sad that the most self-assertive, intelligent woman is an evil slut. But all in all, very nice show.

I spent some time thinking "I know that guy" about Lucius Vorenus, but was still a bit surprised to check imdb and realize I'd seen him in Bedrooms and Hallways. I guess the soldiery thing confused me. He's quite pretty, though, and Niobe is just plain beautiful. They can definitely contest Lost's Jin and Sun as the most photogenic troubled married couple on television.

I have absolutely no idea why TWoP insists that Marcus Antonius is hot, though.

Apart from the "Hey, it's that guy" about Lucius Vorenus, the only person I've recognized so far is Octavianus, AKA that little cherub boy from Master and Commander. (*Takes a moment to remember the homosocial hilariousness of sailor porn that was that movie.*) It's really weird to see him all grown up into a sullen teenager, and weirder still that he'll eventually turn into Brian Blessed. (Oops, wrong TV show.)

And on a final note, a few video links. Lost Video Island continues to be a fun place to find new things. The Island Groove is fairly fabulous, for example. (And if you like fanvids with Disney themes, there are many more of those on LVI.)

Since I managed to make jadelennox happy with them, I also want to link to two John Barrowman things. One is an interview where he talks about the kisses (from the Confidential of PotW) and the other is a performance of Anything You Can Do (with Ruthie Henshall).

Enjoy!
