on Captain Jack

Ever since I started watching Casanova (saw the last ep a week ago, btw, D. teased me for crying), I've wondered if the creation of Captain Jack in DW went something like this:

Russell T. Davies: I have a great idea for next week! How about a new companion? We could make him a rogueish sort of guy, very handsome, flirtatious... the kind of guy who'd do anything. Men, women...

Stephen Moffat: Objects?

RTD: Uh... sure, objects. And he's not quite reliable - a bit of a con man - but with a good heart. We could call him Jack. What do you think?

SM: Like Jack Sparrow?

RTD: ...what?

SM: You know, the pirate captain?

RTD: No!

SM: Because he sounds a bit like Jack Sparrow.

RTD: Well he's not, okay?

SM: It'd be great fun if he was, though. I could tease Jack Davenport about it. "Hey, I've got a pirate captain Jack on Doctor Who that's just as good as yours!"

RTD: He's not a pirate!

SM: Oh, fine. (pause) Can he be a captain?

RTD: *sigh* Okay, yeah, sure. Make him a captain.
