How come it's so god-damned impossible to talk about fans in mainstream media without making us sound like morons? Latest example was a link in one of the mailing lists I'm on to an article on slash. It was written by a slasher, and it was still so full of errors I just wanted to rip the writer a new one. (Which I didn't, because the last thing I need in my life right now is a flamewar.)

Is there some sort of change in fandom vocabulary that says the defining factor for calling something "slash" is the explicit sex scenes, and the same-sex stuff is voluntary? Because if so, I sorely need to re-genre half of my fics, and then I'll drag my dinosaur tail into a cave and die from lack of communication skills. See, I always thought it was the other way around.

P.S. And I can't help but wonder how much femslash has to be written before people stops brushing it off as almost non-existant.
