Serenity

So, the Fantastic Film Festival is over, and I'll skip Ainoa (so-so) and Bubba Ho-Tep (good) to go straight to the spoilers for Serenity.

I thought it was better than Firefly - but then, I've never been what you call a browncoat. Sometimes the story lagged a little, but overall, I think it benefitted from having an actual engaging plot. You can have cool people dropping one-liners left and right, but unless they have something interesting to do I get bored sooner or later.

I am fangirling the Operative a lot right now. I know he was terribly evil (redemption aside), but he was terribly evil in such a cool, intelligent way that I just couldn't stop myself from swooning. If Sayid was a fanatic bad guy, he'd be the Operative.

From this perspective, it's natural that I loved the hints that Book had once been an Operative or something very like it. (And might the Operative one day be a Book?)

River is really Joss's Mary Sue to a level that's almost embarrassing, and it's to Summer Glau's credit that she manages to sell it most of the time. Though I did feel a bit of territorial "back off, girlie!" when she took over the pilot seat, because Wash...

Okay, yeah. I knew about Wash. I was pretty thoroughly spoiled for the movie altogether. So I didn't cry, which might also have something to do with the suddenness of the death. (Impaled through the heart - I guess that's Joss's sense of humour.) My eyes did tear up a little when Zoe went "do you really think we're going to survive this?" (poor darling Zoe showed signs of defaitism in that entire fight scene), and during the funeral, and when we saw the dinosaurs at the end... ow. Book kind of feels "right" - he never seemed to find a place on board anyway - but I can't help feeling they could have chosen someone else than Wash. Inara maybe. Mal and the Tams are too caught up in the storyline to get killed, Kaylee would be just as bad as Wash, and killing Zoe would destroy my pairing never the less, so if not Inara there's pretty much just Jayne left.

*ponders*

Yeah, I'm sorry, but I would have sacrificed Jayne to keep Wash.

Anyway, moot point since it's not tradeable. And I can comfort myself with Kaylee, who lived and prospered and even got to finally shag Simon. Yay Kaylee and her unashamed approach to sex. I'm not really a Simon/Kaylee shipper (she can do so much better... like... me), but it's nice with a girl who can get what she wants. Plus that "I'm gonna live!" line just cracked me up.

Altogether, there were some pretty awesome lines, though many of them had been heard in the trailer and I was spoiled for many others. I love the "trap" conversation - Inara may be boring, but that scene was funny never the less.

I also loved that Mr. Universe's lovebot in a way saved the day. What is it with Joss and lovebots anyway? Some kind of warped fantasy?

Despite River's Sueish tendencies, I did love her action scenes. It really shows that Summer Glau is a ballerina. The "my turn" was cool but reminded me a little too much of Wes and Illyria in NFA, a scene that's even cooler.

I'm sure I could think of many more things to say, but sadly not right this instant. I may get back to you. :-)
