What I think is that the trite old platitude, Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, is very true.
Like you, I like reading about people who are different. Which is why I'm so fond of X-Men, I suppose. They have a very definite that seperates them from everybody else.
But with Clark and Doyle and so forth... What is it that makes them different? Alien and Demon. All right. Does that make them feel differently? What makes them beautiful? Are they beautiful at all?
I can like the normal if it's hypernormal. Such as a line from one of my favourite children's books: "Dad bought me a toy wind mill because I was sick. He played with it all night in the bathtub." That one's so true it cracks me up. But I can't see why young debutants all find it necessary to write about drunken singles getting laid.
