What is it about some tragedies that makes them border on the comic?

The other day, a kid called Hussam Abdu was caught by the Israeli army carrying dymanite around his body. The kid cried out "I don't want to die!" and gave up right away, although he did have some problems loosening himself from the dynamite.

As it turned out, he was bullied in school because of his poor grades, and when he was asked to blow himself up he saw it as a chance to be a "hero". Evidently, he'd also been promised 72 virgins in heaven. His older brother was quoted saying that Hussam was a gullible halfwit and the people who'd sent him out must be stupid: "He gets slapped twice by the army and he'll tell everything he knows."

It's so tragic on so many levels. He damned near got people killed. The only reason it all turned out okay was because he turned out to be incompetent even at this. And of course, the sickest bit of it all is that there are people in this world who'd convince a mentally slow teenager that blowing himself up would make him cool.

And somehow, all those tragedies mixed together makes it too much. It's tragedy overkill and I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
