...and yes, I know I'm one of them, there are two things that should be taken into consideration:
1. A faithful adaptation is not the same thing as a good movie. No, it is not. Even The Princess Bride as a movie was very different from the book, despite being written by the same person. You know why? Because William Goldman isn't an idiot. Movies and books are different media and need to be told in different ways. Complaining that one isn't like the other is like complaining that the Last Supper in Jesus Christ Superstar isn't anything like Michelangelos version.
2. Ralph Bakshi's version. I don't think I need to elaborate on this.
