Get out of my Fucking Head!!!!love2loveherNovember 28 2003, 07:46:00 UTC
Sigh. I have been obsessing over the stand recently - after watchign my DVD, then being convinced I needed to read the book again, the *whole* book (I usually just go read my favorite parts every now and then) and havign finished that task, I have damn Stand fanfiction in my head. I *refuse* to write Stand fanfic - but the damn story won't stop bugging me. I think I'll have to writie it and delete it immediatly, cause the story (in my head) is crap and not worthy or being shared in any capacity.
I agree with you on Randall, Lloyd and Trashy - all done wonderfully, adn as for the cheesy special effects, well yeah. They were quitecheezy. Jamie and Miguel are on the commentary part of the DVD, and they do have some things to say about the special effects (damnit, if I'm giong to obsess about something, I'm going to obsess about something, and *yes* I've seen the whole DVD with director's commentary - I think... I know I have seen it with Rob and Jamie, and Miguel's commentary...) I though Nadine was portrayed well enough. The director constantly complained that her wig was absolutely hideous because of her low hairline. I think with a better wig she would have been more lady-like. But then again, I saw the movie so recently after reading the book that she *is* Nadine. nd I liked the "We are all dead adn this is HELL!" line - cheezy or not. Which is part of the reason that I *had* to read the bok again, was that I realized that I can't remember how *I* envisioned the characters. I forgot that Harold was suppose to be fat and disgusting. Gary Sinise *IS* Stu - and I love him to death! It sucks that he can't be known for much more than Lt. Dan. He was a good guy to start with, he was a good guy throughout, and fo some reason that hussy-bitch fran ended up with him. But still, he was a good guy in the end with his limp and his brat-woman. Oh how I don't like Frannie. And I think Minnie Driver did a great job of making her just as dislikable as Stephen King wrote her. She's pregnant, but shes portrayed as a little child, but she gets to be on the damn free zone committee? and then in the end of the whole damn book she wants to go back to MAINE??!! Oh how I wanted Stu to slap her into reality and go find a real woman...
And then there is Nick. I absolutely loved Nick's character in the book - but I couldn't love Rob Lowe's Nick. I think he did a fine job ith it, but he is just not *Nick.* I think it all started with him not "having" Julie Lawry in that drugstore. Well.. and I dont know how much was in the abridged version - but in the unabridged version nick had one eye gorged out, shot himself in the leg, and in general almost died before he even met Tom Cullen. In comparison, Rob Lowe's character was a pansy. And he wouldn't even let Julie kiss him. And as for the deaf inconsistancies - I think they also come from Stephen King's writing. He put way too much faith in lip-reading for that boy.
I think thats all for me ont he subject for now. As for buying the DVD, let me tell you - it can eat your life away if you get hte urge to watch it one weekend. It's one thing to pop in 10 things I hate about you (which I also own, and love) and waste 2 hours of your life, but get the urge to watch that thing and you find whole weekends going down the drain. so go, buy a DVD player, and buy the DVD! but first, I think you should read the unabridged version. some of it is crap (like "The Kid" a character not included in the abridged version, for good reason)
sigh. this is not helping my Stand fixation at the moment...

Minnie Driver? Is your subconscious playing with you or something? *grin*
I think Minnie Driver would probably have made a more likeable Fran, coming to think of it... But that would have been out of character. At least *I've* always been annoyed as hell with Fran.
It's sort of a theme for Stephen King actually. Bad leading ladies. (Unless they're old or semi-old, in which case tey tend to shape up a bit.) Other themes would be bad endings and an unfortunate tendency of showing the monsters when he really shouldn't.
I've bought the unabridged version now and peeked a bit into it, though not started reading it properly yet. I think there's a *lot* that was taken out for the abridged one, and it only makes sense that they'd take out mostly the same things for the miniseries.
Fanfic sounds nice... there isn't much out there, and most of what is, is crap. Of course, it's not easy to write *anything* when a majority of characters are dead by the end of the book.
Speaking of fanfic, you don't happen to know where I could find that Larry/Nick story I read some time ago? I've been searching like crazy, but it seems to have disappeared from the face of the Internet.

larry/nick? nope havent seen it. But I shall look for it now - I may have seen it. Its not a couple I would have imagined but one I might enjoy. I never realy developed an opinion of Larry, except that I couldn't relate. And i usually have a thing for singers...
and the Minnie Driver thing *is* a total slip of the subconscious. For some reason my mind totally applies that name to Molly.
And as for the fanfic - it would have to be AU. Another part of the crappy plot I can't figure out. but basically its probaby a major Mary-Sue piece - where Nick has a lover. Cause damnit, Nick needs a lover. Larry, Ralph and Stu have lovers - Nick needs one too (and glen - an idea that *just* formed in my head) but I'm thinking in my lover story that nick doesn't get blown up - but she might be maimed a good bit and left unable to walk except for the need of reconstructive Knee surgery, which obviously the ob/gyn doc they have in town isn't able to do, so she is left with a leg that is practically worthless but that in the old world would haev had a little knee surgeryand been back to normal... I think right now she's considering amputation, not at all inspired by a lengthy mount of Joe-fic thank you very much.
but its so mary-sue-ish, and nick-centered, and there is such a non-existance of The Stand fic (and dear god the thought of Mr. King stumbling upon it just scares me enough to never post a word of it) but this maimed girl will not leave me alone.
The miniseries was based ont eh abridged version of the book. Stephen King decided that if he was giong to have to condense things to 6 hours, he would start from the already condensed work. I am interested to see if your opinion changes after reading the unabridged work...

I'm interested in finding that out too. From what I've peeked, there are some pretty important changes.
As for the fanfic, I've been searching mostly for slash, although I've encountered some other fanfic as well. Crossovers seem popular, but of course they're about *other* characters. (And not that I mind seeing half the people of Buffy dying, but it's not The Stand, you know?) I've found some Nick/Tom, which creeps me out just a little, and then a little bit more because I can actually *see* it.
But of course, the entire story is full of that so-called "homosocial desire" and it's shown a lot more in the film, what with most of the girl characters being downplayed. I've even thought of making an icon of Adam Sorke saying "you're awful cute when you're angry, Stu"...
