I hate my bank + teenage lesbians of the best kind

A fellow PG fan used to chime in from time to time with "stupid people" he'd met lately. Well, this is a version, I guess. I hate my bank. Today, right before lunch time, I went shopping. The card didn't come through. I asked the clerk to keep my bags, and then went up to the bank. A lot of people sat around, since nobody's card was working. Fifteen minutes after my arrival, a customer turned around and said "their computer isn't working, nobody will get any money". Far be it from the bank people to actually say this *themselves*. I went to my parents' house and picked up the money I got for my birthday, and then went back to the shop. From trying to pay to actually paying it took 45 minutes, and I was hungry even before I started. Rich world problem of the day.

Over to the next topic: I spend a lot of time at Television Without Pity (TWoP), debating on the forums. The Buffy people were sobbing about ME ruining the *only* good lesbian couple on TV, which I agree is a big problem and would be even bigger if Tara and Willow didn't annoy me by acting more like two six-year-olds in a sandbox than two grown-up women in love. The Smallville HoYay were recommending books, and all the books I could think of were untranslated or already mentioned. So I started talking about the Swedish film Fucking Åmål. And it certainly can be talked about here as well.

About four years ago, Titanic got kicked in the box office ass in Sweden by a somewhat shaky and gritty domestic film about teenage life in the boring little town of Åmål. (The title was controversial even there, but when a title was suggested, the director replied, "I could call it fucking bloody cock-Åmål.") There's a smart and ostracized girl - Agnes - with parents who mean well but can't help, and barely any friends since it's rumoured she's a lesbian. There's a brazen, self-assured girl who acts like a slut even though she's a virgin - Elin. There's a dare to "kiss the lesbian" that slowly turns into much more than that. And no, dammit, in spite of how it may sound there are no plot contrivances, false notes or anything else so easily attached to high school films. (I *love* high school films, but they tend to have little in common with reality. The only American teen story I've seen that even comes close to it is the TV show My So-Called life.)

The film got shipped abroad. It was given the less vulgar but cheesy title Show Me Love. It was praised by reviewers, lovers of European films, lovers of American films, slow Joe in the back row - in short, everyone who could get their hands on it. It's the main reason I can't cry for Tara - she doesn't stand a chance against Agnes.

film talk, rl, fucking åmål
