I believe he is simply a product of his time. Gintama's Edo may get technologically upgraded in such a short time, but its people's thoughts and believes could not possibly be upgraded at that fast rate.

Ah, I'm actually not a hundred percent certain about that. ^^;; All I know about women not living with men mostly comes from historical fictions, but I've never come across any information that says differently, so I suppose it has more than enough basis from real life. And now I'm kind of reminded of Yoshiwara, as it's probably as modern a place as one can get in Edo time, but even that place doesn't seem to really have men and women living together...

Hmm...that's a good point, for whatever reason, his people could have been the ones choosing to leave instead. And I like the idea of them possibly feeling misled when they joined the faction with a more radical agenda but Katsura-san has mellowed his approach along the way. I have my (possibly nit-picking) doubt about any of them being captured by the Shinsengumi, however. Would Katsura-san stay still and let them rot in prison? Besides, the Shinsengumi don't seem very interested in the small fry -- they probably figure if they got its leader, they would also get the whole faction in one fell swoop (or make the faction disband, at least). (Which, if that is what they really believe, is careless of them, I think. Katsura-san is always one step ahead of the Shinsengumi, even if sometimes just barely.)

Good point, it's easy to forget that there was a life and a culture there before the Amanto came... Although it's been at least 20 years since they arrived, it's quite a lot of time for attitudes to change.

Haha, well, I don't think they really live together in Yoshiwara either, more like just sleep together XD But the topic is definitely interesting, there are no women at Shinsengumi, either, so women not living with men must be a pretty certain fact.

Katsura-san would definitely save them, there is no doubt about it whatsoever! But even a short stay in prison might influence those people whose beliefs were not strong and they would want to leave Katsura-san's faction simply because they would not want to end up in prison again.

You're right, the Shinsengumi usually target the leaders, but they do make some arrests (for instance, sometimes terrorists demand to free their captured allies), so it is not unlikely that somebody from Katsura's group has also been in prison.

That's our Katsura, the Shinsengumi will never catch him! :D
