Gundam references in the Rehno arc
A fellow Joi patriot from Russia Riza_Honoo has provided me with some information about Gundam references in the Rehno arc, which I would like to share to promote understanding of the funny parts in this arc and, by extension, understanding of Our Hero for all those who, like me, don't know a thing about Gundams. Some info from the comments on previous entries was also added here.
The references are to the series Mobile Suit Gundam aka Gundam 0079 (or just 79).
The main bad guy in Gundam 79, Char Aznable has the same voice actor as Dark Vader - Ikeda Shuichi. Also, their helmets look the same.
The hero of Gundam 79, Gundam pilot Amuro (brown-haired) has the same seiyuu as Elizabeth in this arc - Furuya Tooru.
In Gundam 79, a character named Bright hit Amuro. Gintama had a reference to that, with Gin-san saying that Bright didn't hit him.
After the reference to Bright Sakamoto mentions his participation in the war, which refers to One Year War in Gundam 79.
And Gin-san says he would do things 3 times faster, which is a reference to Char, who could pilot his mecha 3 times faster than other humans.
The user manual for the Gunsam that Katsura used and the whole Gunsam launch sequence is pretty much a copy of how Amuro started the Gundam.
The music during Katsura's lift-off is the OP of Gundam 79.
Yelling "Ikimasu!!!" and lowering the visor in a dramatic gesture is a trademark of Gundam pilots.
These scenes are also almost perfect copies:
Char shot Gundam's head and leg off, the same happened in Gintama:
In Gundam, newtypes (people with special powers) telepathically talked about love and peace, in Gintama Eli and Katsura were telepathically being dorks:
Katsura = Gundam's character Lalah, he says her lines about time, her OST theme is heard, and the lightnings signify that their newtype senses are tingling:
And the Rehno mothership is kind of similar to the spacecraft in Gundam:
