The other reason for Memorial Day is, of course, the official kick-off of summertime activities - most notably the first real barbequeing/grilling day of the year. Everyone either fires up one of those nice gas grills or (for the rest of us without money) pulls one of those $29.99 blue light special charcoal grills out of storage, dusts it off, and prays it hasn't rusted apart over the winter.
We had traditional picnic fare - beef franks (Oscar Meyer) and brats (Johnsonville) with all the necessary condiments; baked potatoes (Russets, of course) with butter, cheddar cheese, and sour cream; barbeque baked beans (from a can, Bush's - I hate that dog); tortilla chips (restaurant-style, from Chili's) with guacamole (fresh frozen); iced tea (Southern-style, slightly sweet) and a watermelon (seedless and nicely chilled).
We picnicked in the living room and had a lovely time. Added bonus - made so much food that we'll have leftovers all week!
