I just finished New Moon by Stephenie Meyer, after devouring Twilight over the weekend.  Waiting for the second book to arrive was torture.  Fortunately, the rest of the most current chapter of
contedicesare was posted inbetween times, which was just enough to tide me over *g*

I am officially hooked on this series.  Great.  Just what I need, another obsession.

Twilight and New Moon (along with the upcoming Eclipse) are part of the Twilight Series (originally supposed to be a trilogy, I believe, but it looks like it got out of hand, much to my personal delight) which centers around a young woman named Bella Swan who moves from sunny Phoenix, AZ to cloudy Forks, WA to live with her father in a sef imposed exile due to her mother's recent remarriage.  Standard YA subject matter so far, right?  At school she notices, and is noticed by, the table full of rather too beautiful people that sit apart and never seem to eat food.  Three guesses, first two don't count.  Edward Cullen - bronze hair, face of a pagan god - in particular, seems like he cannot decide what to make of her.  And then it gets messy.

New Moon continues Bella's story, reintroducing some minor characters from the first story and building a new set of friendships, rivalries, and mythologies amongst the neighboring Quileute tribe.  Jacob finally gets his moment to shine.

The writing, once I got past the first couple of pages -- which were for me a bit too much like the average YA book that has bored me to pieces in the past -- I was drawn in by the addictive writing and the characterizations.  So many to both love and hate.  The family of vampires are drawn with great sympathy, yet retain a definite air of imminent menace.  I am intrigued by her take on both vampire lore and lycanthropy, mixing original elements with the more traditional mainstays of the legends.

Her evocation of the damp greenness of the Pacific Northwest lends so much to the atmosphere of the book.  And the storyline strings you along, giving you just enough information to keep you reading because you just know the answer has to be in there somewhere.  I read until about two in the morning to finish Twilight because I couldn't leave Bella in danger by shutting the book and just going to sleep.  And now, having just finished up New Moon, I have the most ridiculous crush on Jacob Black, who is much too young for me *g*

I'm greedily pleased that she has decided to write Twilight from Edward's perspective.  Midnight Sun should prove most illuminating.

But what am I going to do now?  Eclipse isn't even tentatively scheduled for release until Fall.

*wails*

Rhi, I think I need more ABR... I'm getting distracted by other men *G*

ETA:  I realized later that the above comment makes no sense in this context.  Let me explain... no that will take too long, let me sum up...  Stephenie Meyer would cast Charlie Hunnam as Dr. Carlisle Cullen (Edward's "father") if she had her druthers.  Gee, he looks an awful lot like Hal.... ;)

reading, abr, twilight
