Hi! I'm Kat - I completely missed the official meme but I'm friending you all anyway! I've got a pretty open door policy on friending and I never take defriending personally. I have been missing the "old days of LJ" myself and this seemed like a great way to get more involved.
My latest history of posting to LJ has been pretty poor, but I'm looking to change that. So you will see posts from me more than once a year going forward!
I'm a married mom of 2 boys, ages 8 and 6. I grew up in upstate New York State, lived all over the East Coast, and have been living in upstate South Carolina for the past 14 years. We're in a pretty neat area in that it is really growing, trying to improve and is attracting transplants from all over the world. It's pretty rare to hear a "real" southern accent around here anymore. And the weather is so lovely!
Fandom-wise, I started watching Buffy, well, on yesterday's date 19 years ago. I'll admit I wasn't blown away at first; in fact, I'm not sure I sat through the whole thing. But I remember that I caught a certain DeSoto crashing through the Sunnydale sign one night and I sat up straight on my couch. Once Spike came into the picture, I rarely missed an episode. I still have Once More With Feeling on a taped VHS somewhere. Yep, I'm old.
Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Dollhouse, Dr. Horrible - love 'em all. I can still be inspired by them, too. I have watched them all...an embarrassing number of times over. Love lots of other shows, too - Castle and Supernatural right now. Also have been a big fan of Alias, Fringe, Farscape, Six Feet Under, the X-Files, Gilmore Girls... there's probably more!
But Whedon's stories are the closest to my heart. They have shaped how I think about narrative writing and how I myself write. I have always loved how he drew his people so clearly and so carefully in their quirks and strengths - even the ones who weren't my favorites. Every single one of my original characters can be traced to Buffy character base in at least appearance. I hope to be published some day but I'm extremely aware how much of a longshot this is, so we'll see what happens.
My fandom writing has been pretty solidly Spike/Fred, but I try to do ensembles and get everyone's voices in the mix. I have been poking away at the same sequel fanfic for years now, but it's looking like I can actually finish it this year. Having boys in school for hours does wonders for my creativity!
That's me! Thanks for reading if you got this far. I'm looking forward to getting to know you! If you have any question at all for me, please feel free to throw one out in comments!
