Avatar failed to meet my low expectations

Kat ... conveniently not mentioning why she hasn't posted in nearly a year. I've been busy.

I saw Avatar last night. The 3D was quite good so much better done that the 3D in the two 3D previews before the feature attraction. The 3D wasn't gimmicky at all.

OTOH you know it's bad when you feel the urge to check how much more movie you have to suffer through when you're less than an hour into a 2 hour and 40 minute movie. I was so bored I was seriously tempted to just walk out. I didn't and the big finale battle scene did look nice, but still not worth it.

The Na'avi were not very alien at all. Seriously, they smile, cry, shriek, and apparently mate in pretty much the same way humans do and their culture was clearly modeled very closely on that of Native Americans.

The only cool sci-final idea was the use of the biological neural network to transfer the mind from a human body to an avatar. When they tried that with Grace, I just had to think "way cool," and immediately realized that that's how JakeSully was going to get into his avatar body permanently.

While I thought the caricature of the military-industrial complex was clearly the enemy, I am still bothered that Sully was disloyal to the side he threw his lot in with in the beginning. I mean they were clearly the bad guys from day one, yet Jake helped them. I guess I am just a person that feels once you pick a side, you need to stick with it. But more than that, I think I'm pissed off that a moronic jarhead made contact and saved the day instead of the scientists. This is science fiction, I want the scientist and the researchers to save the day and be the heroes. Instead this warrior comes along and does what the scientist had been unable to do.

Overall I was disappointed. I didn't expect an great plot, but I sure didn't expect to be so bored. All this was was eye candy. OTOH the last movie I saw before that was the sci fi flick The Surrogates with Bruce Willis. I had low expectations for that as was pleasantly surprised when it exceeded them. A key plot point was a new technology and how the human race was struggling with adapting their lives to it. It was good, thoughtful science fiction with a morale dilemma and action scenes.
