This must be the 4th time this month that Hikaru is crying on his shoulder again confiding about his break up with his girlfriend. They broke up for real this time, he said. He won’t get affected he said, tears rolling down from his eyes non-stop and trying to hide his sobs. Inoo laughs and jokes about him being so soft when it comes to his girlfriend. Not a nice way of comforting his best friend but Hikaru doesn’t complain anyway.
He wonders what’s wrong with Hikaru’s girlfriend. He always thinks about how he won’t do that to Hikaru if he were his girlfriend. Hikaru is always smiling when they’re together, but whenever he’s with Miyu he’s always sad. His best friend doesn’t deserve that.
Oh… yes. He’s just a best friend. And a guy, unfortunately, because Hikaru likes girls. They can’t be lovers. Such a sad fact slapping on his face all the time.
How long has he loved Hikaru? He almost lost count at the number of times the boy had made his heart beat so wild. That time they met at the playground of his nursery school, he knew he would be special. When Hikaru told him he’s dating a girl in his university named Miyu, Inoo congratulated him but his heart sunk at the bottom of the deepest ocean. All his dreams, all his wishes suddenly crashed in a minute. After that, he decided to forget about his feelings and be the best friend Hikaru can have in this world.
It was hard though. Especially when Hikaru invites him to join them on their out of town trips, or dinners, and he can’t even decline because Hikaru will feel bad. He’d be there watching the couple being so lovey dovey while his heart is breaking. He’s also the first person who hears his best friend’s heart problems and gives him the worst advice, just like now.
Hikaru is already sleeping when he turns his head to his side. Maybe he dozed off while he was silent and thinking about his own feelings. Inoo likes it this way; at least he’s saved from giving off lies to himself.
He runs his hand on Hikaru’s hair, blonde streaks smoothly brushing in his palm. If someday, his best friend finds a new girl to love or reconciles with Miyu, he hopes to be there for him still. His hand stops on Hikaru’s warm cheek. He can only do this when he’s asleep, he half-smiles at the thought of it.
“I love you Hikaru. I love you. I love you…” he fights back the sob that was threatening to escape his mouth not wanting to wake the boy up.
So ironic how the person that makes him happy is the same person that keeps him sad.

“I’m sorry Hikaru, we can’t be together if it’s like this.”
“Miyu , I… Let me - “
“Stop it.”, the words were firm but she remained calm “You don’t love me. You NEVER loved me.”
Hikaru’s eyebrow creases trying to decipher what she just said.
“Tell me Hikaru, who do you really love?”
There was a moment of silence, and when he opened his mouth to answer her name, his mind goes off to a different direction. She was right all along.
“It’s him right?”
He nods, he’s pretty sure she’s referring to the person he’s thinking about.
“I thought having a girl in my life would make me forget those feelings. I’m sorry Miyu.”
Miyu did not say a word but gives him an apologetic smile and a warm embrace. Maybe she had known since the beginning. The reason why they can’t have a steady relationship was his indecisiveness to his own feelings.
“I love him but I'm too afraid to lose him as my friend.”
