It was an awkward silence. The kind that they both want to break but no one has the courage on doing so. Hikaru pretends he’s busy writing the essay topic on the book though in reality, he’s having a mental war between admitting he’s in love or denying it to himself, one of those will of course lead him to his happier days. It must be his ego that he wants to save. He has a lot of guy friends, he works out thrice a week to achieve that look that would attract pretty girls, he’s into guitar and drums and all things that prove he’s manly, so he laments on this problem as if he’d die if he decides to choose the other one. Maybe if he distances himself from the subject of this confusion, he can think properly. He convinces himself that maybe if he ignores the feeling, then he can forget it.
Unfortunately, ignoring and distancing don’t work well when Kei is beside you letting out heavy sighs consecutively. Hikaru swallows an invisible lump in his throat and glances at him. That’s when he noticed those dark eye bags below his lovely eyes which obviously prove there’s a reason behind all of these. He just doesn’t want to ask what’s wrong, coz really, he wouldn’t want to get involved deeply. Considering how his heart went crazy that time he hugged him in his sleep, he wants that feeling to fade away… fast.
And while he’s contemplating on all these things, he didn’t notice Kei standing up with his phone on his ears. He only came back to his senses when he heard the door closed.
Curious about it, he runs to the door and carefully presses his ear on the wooden thing. He’s eavesdropping, yes. But that’s the only way he can let his mind at peace from this worrying.
Kei’s voice is gentle, a touch of sadness in it. Hikaru assumes it’s not the “boyfriend” because compared to the way he talked to him last time, it was not like this. But as the conversation gets longer, his ears did not miss the name “Kou-chan” and he only got more curious.
“I miss you already. I’m sorry if I can’t come with you...” So, that Kou-chan guy is not around huh? “It’s hard when you’re not here but I will endure. I will wait for you.”
Hikaru wanted to laugh at how mushy those lines were but he did not. He cannot.
He stops listening. He returned to where he was sitting instead, not wanting to hear any more of that conversation. He had already decided that he will ignore this unknown feeling and getting jealous is not helpful at all.
Jealous?
Did he just admit that he’s jealous of Kei’s boyfriend? He literally bangs his head on the table to shake off the thought in his mind. He must forget. He shall forget the unnecessary thoughts like that. If this kind of struggle within him continues, he expects he’d be inside the mental rehab instead of Meiji University in the future. That’s not a part of his life goals.
“What are you doing?” Kei is back in the room looking at him in awe.
“I’m doing a brain exercise.” He says with a bitter smile.
Kei snickers, probably amused at his weird action. That’s the first time Kei smiled today and he felt relieved.
“Have you finished answering?”
Hikaru looks on his paper and back to Kei, “Almost there.”
“Ok. Those are usually the most difficult questions in the entrance test so that’s a good progress for you.”
“I see…” Really awkward.
Hikaru must have missed that if he did not stare at his face a bit longer. That single tear that Kei tried to blink away. He thought he was just imagining things but he really saw it. He wishes he’s not sensitive to girls crying (Kei is not a girl but he looks like one so Hikaru can’t make an exception). Did that Kou-chan do a very bad thing to make him cry?
“Hey, you okay?” he asked in a rather icky tone to cover up his concern.
“What are you saying? Of course I’m okay.”
“Liars go to hell did you know that?”
“I’m not lying, you’re so persistent…”
“I’ve read before that it’s really hot down there in hell.”
“Whatever.”
“You…” it’s now Hikaru heaving a sigh. How on earth Kei would tell him a personal problem to think that they just met not so long time ago. They only have a student-tutor relationship so it’s only reasonable that he’d refuse to share what he’s going through right now. Isn’t that how it should be?, “You can also rely on me you know.”
He said it. Without having so much thought, he said it. Sometimes his mouth is being too stubborn, yet too honest. He could see Kei’s face brighten up when he said those words.
“My friends and I are going out tomorrow. Are you free?” he asks trying to change the topic.
“I have class until noon. It might be a trouble for your fr---“
“I’m going to fetch you tomorrow. Please come with us.”
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Standing in front of the university building, Hikaru can’t believe that Meiji is this big. He has always dreamed of entering a prestigious college when he was young but Meiji is intimidating when you are not yet a part of the school. The building is towering beneath the busy city of Tokyo and lots of students are coming out, each is busy with their own things.
Daiki yawns beside him and he had to nudge the smaller boy to stop doing it.
“You’re embarrassing me. Please act like elite.”
“What’s with the discrimination?! Besides, why are we here? Isn’t your entrance exam still next month?”, Daiki pauses for a while but smiles in a naughty way when he seemed reminded of something, “Am I going to meet your girlfriend today?”
Hikaru blushes yet answers with a loud “NO”
“You wouldn’t be asking me about love if you don’t have anyone you’re interested at.”, Daiki teases.
He’s ready to return to him with a ridiculous answer when a familiar face caught his attention coming towards their direction.
“He’s here.”
Daiki follows Hikaru’s line of vision and he was amused to see a very pretty guy smiling at them. Well, he’s kind of disappointed that it’s a guy. He can tell by the lack of healthy chest.
“You really came huh?” Kei snorts but doesn’t look annoyed.
“Of course. It’s boring if we just meet for studying every day. We need to unwind too.” Hikaru reasons out. His smile reaching both ends.
“I still have lots of homework to finish so make sure I’ll enjoy hanging out with you.”
If Daiki did not make a coughing sound behind them, the two would have forgotten his presence.
“Oh, this is my friend Daiki. He may seem small but he’s already 20.” Hikaru introduces while signaling him to come forward.
“That’s not necessary for the introduction.”
“Hi Dai-chan. Is it ok to call you that? I’m Inoo Kei, by the way.” Kei offers a handshake which Daiki accepts with a smile.
“So!” Hikaru breaks their handshake and wrapped his arms around their shoulders, “Let’s go!”
“To where?” Kei asked, surprised but trudges along with them.
“You’ll know later.”
The wink Hikaru gave to Kei made the latter smile once again. A more sincere smile, that is.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kei didn’t expect that he’d be brought to an amusement park. The last time he’d been to such place was when he was in elementary. His family would always go to an amusement park almost once a month, but when he entered high school, the pressure on him to study better had increased so he missed out on the fun. Kouta invited him to have a date here too, once. He declined it because of a major test in the university. But now he’s here, with Hikaru and his friend… It’s too ironic.
Hikaru nudged him as he was busy in his own thoughts.
“Are you thinking about your homework?”
“Hey, look! The roller coaster has few people on the line. Come on!” Daiki interrupted, excitedly running towards the ride like a kid.
“That guy…” Hikaru shakes his head and then turns back to Kei, “When he wants something he’ll bug us until we agree.”
“B-but… I have fear of heights.”
“Eh? You mean, you can’t ride the rollercoaster?!”
Daiki was waving at them and Kei is too hesitant on turning them down. He had fainted on a roller coaster ride before and it would be embarrassing if it happens again.
“Don’t worry. I can tell him you can’t.”
That’s the worst thing you could say to a newly met friend, especially to Daiki. He looks adamant to his decision to ride it.
“It’s okay Hikaru. I can do it now.” Hikaru seemed he did not believe what he just said. He’s quite amused at how he could read through his lies.
They walked towards the booth where Daiki is standing, Kei trying hard to not look so stiff. There are only few people in the place today since it’s a weekday so the line for the rides is not that long, which also means he doesn’t have much time to prepare himself for the nerve-wracking experience.
It was not long until an assistant announced the next batch to come over the entrance for the rollercoaster. Daiki pulled them immediately choosing the front part for their seat not noticing that one of his companions is already on the verge of losing his mind looking at the long swirling path they’ll be taking later.
Kei held his breath and closed his eyes convincing himself that this won’t take long. But what surprised him more is the warm hand that took his palm and held it tightly. Without looking he knows whose hand it is. The gentle squeeze is enough for him to know the message it brings. He squeezed back and held on it like it’s his comfort zone. And his nervousness lessened.
They finished the rollercoaster ride without him fainting in his seat.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
They spent the whole day eating and transferring on each rides available. Before he knew it, Kei is totally enjoying this day Hikaru and Daiki. Aside from appreciating the very cute friendship the two has, they don’t make him feel left out. Instead, they made him feel like he belongs to the group for a long time already. Also, he had witnessed the different side of his student, Hikaru. Contrary to what he had always thought of him, Hikaru is a very funny person and he loves to crack jokes every now and then. He’s so fun tp be with and Kei suddenly feels guilty that he forgot about Kouta today. Hasn’t he been crying for the past nights because he made him go with his parents instead on agreeing on his proposal to live together? He did not even answer when he asked about this “Yaotome” guy. He had disappointed his boyfriend so much, it’s hurting him. But then, he convinces himself with their promise to each other that they’ll be together again once he returns. He also made a promise of waiting for him until that day.
He was in this deep thought once again when a strong force pushed him to the side while they are walking. It was Daiki, a playful grin showing in his mouth.
“There, there… Go inside now.”
Kei is clueless on everything but when he took a glance behind him, they’re standing in front of the ferris wheel . The door is already opened, waiting for them to come inside. The odd thing now is Daiki walking away backwards leaving him and Hikaru alone.
“Enjoy your ride. Don’t worry Inoo-chan, that guy there is harmless.”
“What are you saying there?!” Hikaru wanted to chase him but the ride-assistant warned them that the machine is starting and that they should go inside now. In the end, they had no other choice but to be in the ferris wheel… Just the two of them, together.
