Today I went to the Health and Human Services(hhssc) Commission of Texas and got my food stamp card. Cards are being issued to evacuees of Katrina, and all you need to do is fill out a form with info on your salary, expenses, and social security #. This is specially for the evacuees, and the rules are more lenient. I was issued $150 per month for 3 months. That's for a single person. There are many other benefits available to victims of the disaster. Please visit:

Also for evacuees in Texas:
http://www.hhsc.state.tx.us/ To find the closest HHSC office in Texas, call 1-888-312-4567. You can also call the Texarkana location at 903-791-6400. Be sure when you call to let them know where you are currently staying so that they can direct your call to the approriate office.
Also, I have been notified that evacuees can also receive unemployment benefits.
