This pattern is just for a bit of fun. I wanted to recreate the crazy toe socks I got for Christmas when I was nine.
GAUGE:
56 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st worked in the round or 40 st x 56 st in St st = 4 inch square on straight needles.
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.
When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size needles.
MATERIALS:
· Set of 4 dpns size 2 (US) or 12 (UK).
· 1 skein sock weight yarn
STITCH EXPLANATION:
ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and k them together - 1 st decreased.
PATTERN STITCHES
K1, p1 Rib (in the round over an even number of sts)
Round 1: *K1, p1, rep from * around
Rep Round 1 for K1, p1 Rib worked in the round.
SOCK (make 2)
Leg
Cast on 136 sts. Divide sts evenly onto 4 double pointed needles (34 st each). Place marker for beg of round and join, being careful not to twist sts. Work in K1, p1 Rib for 3/4 in. (2 cm). Change to St st worked in the round (k every round) and continue until piece measures about 6 in. (15 cm) from beginning. Place last 32 sts worked onto a holder for top of foot (instep), and continue on rem 68 sts only for heel flap.
Heel Flap
Notes
1. Heel Flap is worked back and forth in rows over the rem 68 sts only.
2. Continue to change color following Stripe Sequence as established.
Row 1: Sl 1, k across.
Row 2: Sl 1, p across.
Rep Rows 1 and 2 until heel flap measures about 2 1/4 in. (5.5 cm).
Turn Heel
Row 1 (RS): K21, ssk, k1, turn.
Row 2: Sl 1, p7, p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 3: Sl 1, k8, ssk, k1, turn.
Row 4: Sl 1, p9, p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 5: Sl 1, k10, ssk, k1, turn.
Row 6: Sl 1, p11, p2tog, p1, turn.
Continue in this way, working 1 more st between dec until all 68 sts have been worked, end with a WS row - 20 sts for heel.
Next Round: k across heel sts, with same needle, pick up and k38 sts along side of heel flap; with 2nd needle k across 32 top of foot (instep) sts on holder; with 3rd needle k across 32 top of foot (instep) sts on holder; with 4th needle, pick up and k38 sts along other side edge of heel flap, with same needle k across 20 heel sts - 180 sts at end of round. Beg of round is at center of heel sts. Place marker for new beg of round.
Shape Gusset
Round 1: Knit.
Round 2: K to last 3 sts on 1st needle, k2tog, k1; k across instep sts; on 4th needle, k1, ssk, k to end of round.
Rep Rounds 1 and 2 until 136 sts rem.
Foot
Work even in St st until foot measures about 7 1/2 in. (19.3 cm), or 2 in. (5 cm) less than desired total length (stop at the point that will be the base of the toes).
Working the Toes:
Knit to the end of needle 1 (left hand side of the bottom of the foot).Place the last 16 st of this
needle on one dpn and the first 16 st of the next needle on a second dpn. Place the rest of the stitches onto waste yarn (trust me you don’t want spare needles or stitch holders getting in the way -- sport weight yarn works great for this).
Big Toe:
Be Careful! These socks have toes so you must remember that you need to make the toes on the second foot the other way round! Starting on the left side of the toes (or on the right side of the toes for second sock) Cast on 4 st between the two sets of stitches (36 st in all) divide these st between 3 dpns(12 each). Knit 14 rounds and then work 1 row knitting 2 st together all the way around (18st) break off yarn and thread the tail end through all remaining stitches, draw tight and fasten off securely.
Second Toe:
Place 10 st from the beginning of the waste yarn and 10 st from the other end of the waste yarn onto dpns. Pick up 4 st from the bottom edge of the big toe, knit across the first 10 st, cast on 4 st as for the big toe, knit across the remaining 10 st (28 st in all). Knit 11 rounds, decrease by k2tog across the entire round (14 st), break off yarn and thread the tail end through all remaining stitches, draw tight and fasten off securely.
Middle Toe:
Place 10 st from the beginning of the waste yarn and 10 st from the other end of the waste yarn onto dpns. Pick up 4 st from the bottom edge of the big toe, knit across the first 10 st, cast on 4 st as for the big toe, knit across the remaining 10 st (28 st in all).Knit 9 rounds, decrease by k2tog across the entire round (14 st),break off yarn and thread the tail end through all remaining stitches, draw tight and fasten off securely.
Forth Toe:
Place 10 st from the beginning of the waste yarn and 10 st from the other end of the waste yarn onto dpns. Pick up 4 st from the bottom edge of the big toe, knit across the first 10 st, cast on 4 st as for the big toe, knit across the remaining 10 st (28 st in all). Knit 8 rounds, decrease by k2tog across the entire round (14 st),break off yarn and thread the tail end through all remaining stitches, draw tight and fasten off securely.
Little Toe:
Place the remaining sts on two dpns pick up 4 st from the bottom edge of the 4th toe (24 st) work 7 rounds. decrease by k2tog across the entire round (12 st),break off yarn and thread the tail end through all remaining stitches, draw tight and fasten off securely. Sew in all ends and then start again to make a second foot…
Be Careful! These socks have toes so you must remember that you need to make the toes on the second foot the other way round! To do this once you get to the toe shaping you need to knit around the first three needles before slipping the rest of the stitches onto the waste yarn. After that you just follow the toe shaping as for the first foot.
Finishing
Weave in ends.
