I had a fairly busy week for once! Not with work, but hey, play is busy too.
Wednesday evening I met up with Leah, who was my best friend in middle school and recently found me again on Facebook after we lost touch in college. Apparently she is a lawyer now and back in DC. And will be coming to NY soon, possibly.
Thursday I had lunch with a lovely woman I know from the
MFC, at my local mall of all places. I hadn't realized she lived so close. I'll see her in NY again as well. After that, I had dinner with a Consumating friend I had met once before last year. I jokingly called it our annual get-together. It was a very internetty day. To make it even more fitting, this was the friend that Mika originally reminded me of, when I first became aware of him. He's cut his hair now, so that similarity was gone, but he did show up wearing lime green canvas shoes under skinny jeans and talked about how he knew French and had taken Chinese for a pretty long time but had now forgotten it all, and that made me laugh.
I also want him to give Derek tips on how to dress in a properly 50s fashion. Derek says he does, but mostly he just wears his hat and button-down shirts, with occasional suit jackets. This boy, the jeans and lime green shoes aside, he was wearing argyle socks, a Mr. Rogers type button-up sweater-vest over a white dress shirt, and classic 50s style nerd-glasses. He even wore an undershirt under the dress shirt, although it was black instead of white. He looked like a young scientist from the Twilight Zone (and de actually works for NIH, so it was very appropriate).
Although I think he may himself benefit by advice from
tzarohell, since he expressed a desire to dress more like a dandy without quite knowing how to start.
Then Friday evening Derek arrived, and Saturday I took him to see DC and to the National Gallery. In the evening, we had dinner at an Ethiopian restaurant with Vicky, my old college roommate. Roommate tricked Derek into going drinking afterwards by paying for our dinner and then saying he could repay her by getting her drunk. ;-)
Found a rather attractive hang-out close to the restaurant--a coffee shop-cum-bar, that has all the atmosphere of a cute coffee place, with cozy couches and grad students hunched over their apple laptops, but also serves food and alcoholic beverages in addition to coffee. (And the best--coffee-based alcoholic drinks!) Unfortunately that was such a good idea it was too full to get a seat so we went somewhere else instead. Seeing Vicky again was really fun, and personally it was one of the best nights out I've had in a while. Even if Vicky apparently had lots of embarrassing stories about rooming with me that I had entirely forgotten (ie, expunged from memory out of vanity and self-preservation).
Sunday Derek made me pancakes (which all ended up in the trash due to a small mistake with baking soda vs. baking powder, but he was very sweet to make them anyway), but then he had to leave. After I dropped him off, I went to have dinner with
dangermousie and her friend.
Then I came home and collapsed and slept for 12 hours again. (But am up now...)
Finally today/yesterday, I met for coffee with my much beloved former Georgetown professor, and then was going to see Vicks again, but she had to cancel. So instead I called up
dangermousie again and we met up in Dupont with her and her husband, and the I went over to her place and watched anime. The best part of that was that I am the one stepping up in defense of yaoi or slash on her lj all the time, yet here she was the one arguing with me that the main character had to be at least bi, not straight, and slashing two of the side characters.
Now, soon back to Rutgers and to studying... meanwhile, good luck to all those on my flist who are going through a hard time right now, whether academically, personally, or however else. May you all have resolution soon enough.
