Goddammit! This seriously sucks! My fave New York coffee shop, Alt cafe, is
closing down in a week in order to be reincarnated into "Hopscotch, a café tailored to the needs of children and families." Fuck.
I can't believe the rate at which East Village is disappearing. First the Korova Milk Bar closed down (it was just two blocks up from Alt cafe), and now instead of its punky Clockwork Orange glory there's a sterile yuppie cafe/bookstore. Then CBGB closed down. Now this. I feel like Sarah from Labyrinth. It's not faaaaaair. Fuck, I really, genuinely loved that coffee shop, and not just because I am told it was "an East Village institution." I loved its furniture, I loved people-watching its clientele and the random discussions I'd get into with strangers whenever I went there, I loved its music when Music!Boy worked there, and the really nice barista who put up with my chatter (and who is vegan!) and all their vegan cakes. And I even loved the grimy dirty gritty mirror-less bathroom with the door that never locked properly.
And now it's all going to be gone in a little over a week.
I am gonna go be sad and cry.
Ironically, the way I found this out is that
thegreatmissjj asked if any NY-area people knew of an East Village coffee shop that had free wifi and was open late for her to hang out in, and I jumped on the opportunity to take her there... only to get the news. Ugh. Oh well, it was nice seeing JJ again anyhow, and we had a nice evening chatting and sharing cartoons and petting dogs. I want to live in NY so I can see her and other people more often.
Though since it seems that the NY I love is inexorably headed towards erasure at a breakneck pace, maybe I don't.
