EXHIBITIONS
Italian Women Artists from Renaissance to Baroque
Mar. 16 - Jul. 15, 2007
This major international exhibition brings together more than 60 paintings, prints, etchings and drawings by 15 prominent women painters including Artemisia Gentileschi, Sofonisba Anguissola, and Giovanni Garzoni, and presents them within a historical context. It examines the position of women artists, their education and training, the economics of art production, and the cultural context both within Italy and beyond the country’s borders. Ultimately, it addresses the ways in which these artists overcame long-held societal roles and cultural biases to leave behind a fascinating visual legacy. Italian Women Artists is co-curated by Jordana Pomeroy, NMWA senior curator, and Dr. Vera Fortunati, professor of art history, University of Bologna.
I have been to the museum, and it's really nice. The in-house selection covering 'SCA period' isn't huge, but it's really, really good. And it seems that they have added more for this exhibit. So, if you're going that way...
