As a relatively recent and clearly fanatical convert to the awesomeness that is David Tennant, I’ve been scrambling to get my hands on all DT’s works to date. Thanks to the fabulous buffyaddict13 who so kindly sent me copies, I got to see Blackpool, Einstein & Eddington, and Recovery this week! Add in Hamlet and Doctor Who: End of Time in the same week and I’m ( Read more... )

[here from tennant_love]

'Blackpool' is so much love. I am a lifelong 'Doctor Who' fan and David really stole my heart as the Tenth Doctor, but despite all that, at the end of the day, Peter Carlisle is definitely my favorite character I've seen David play. Like you, I wasn't too sure about the whole musical thing, but they made it work and it all turned out so unique and wonderful. And 'Boy With a Thorn in his Side'? Yeah, so hilarious. Especially when poor David messes up. Bless.

I was so impressed with 'Einstein and Eddington'. Oftentimes David gets cast in quite 'bombastic' and 'manic' roles, which he does really amazing at of course (if I could harness even an ounce of that energy he has!), but I especially like his sweet, quiet performances (if you've not seen 'Learners' or 'Last September' -- the latter being my favorite film of his, by the way -- I would highly recommend them). This film was so sweet and poignant with a lovely intensity boiling under the surface.

'Recovery'...oh, god. Like you, when I got into Tennant (about two years ago or so), I plowed through all his work. Many of things I saw, I've seen time and time again, but 'Recovery'...I think I've only seen it about 2-3 times. It is a hard, hard movie to watch and really pulls you through the ringer emotionally. Still, I think it is definitely one of David's finest performances. I especially love the end, when he's dancing with Sarah Parish's character to Paul Weller. He's weeping and just so vulnerable, but she assures him that they'll work through it together. Gets me every time.

I can see how you had trouble with 'Bright Young Things'. Honestly, I had difficultly getting into it the first time, myself. I liked it better the second time, but I can definitely say that it's not for everyone. YMMV, of course. Maybe you could give it another shot later?

Sorry to tl;dr all over your journal! I can ramble for days about Tennant!

Welcome!

I agree completely with everything you said re Blackpool, E&E, and Recovery! <3

Blackpool is my new favorite pick-me-up. Peter Carlisle is so much love! And the whole thing just gets me smiling and laughing like nothing else I've ever seen.

This film was so sweet and poignant with a lovely intensity boiling under the surface. You sum up E&E perfectly! I, too, really enjoy seeing DT in quieter roles like E&E and Learners (just saw that one and will probably get a review up sometime next week). I wish those had more visibility. I never would have known they existed, much less found them, without doing some digging and getting help from fellow fans. I only heard about Last September through recent comments, and I'm still looking for that one.

Recovery was so very painful to watch, but so worth it. I'm a masochist, so I'll probably watch it again before too long. And you picked one of my favorite scenes! I had to track down that song, and it's now on my "stuck in my head" playlist. Makes me a bit misty just listening to it. Did I mention I'm a masochist? lol

I'll probably give Bright Young Things another try at some point. Once I've worked through DT's prime material, I'm sure I'll come back around to it.

Sorry to tl;dr all over your journal! I can ramble for days about Tennant!

As you might have gathered from the lengths of my posts and comments, I'm all about tl;dr, especially when it comes to Tennant. lol By all means, please, feel free encouraged to ramble away! I love it! Thanks for the great comment!
