Okay. The art and the mix for this story absolutely blew me out of the water. Everything is both beautiful and perfectly fitting for the story, and I so totally do not deserve any of what has been given to me. ♥
Behind the cut is the mix and extras by
squigglepie. There are spoilers, so don't read the individual quotes if that's a problem for you!
Again,
squigglepie, thank you so very much for this mix! I adore it, you know that I do, and I cannot wait until I have the time to start in on the next story!

Okay, you guys. You guys! The cover art for this mix has blown me out of the water as much as the mix has because, seriously! Awesome! I love the sense of motion inherent in the lines and swirls, and the way they speak of the mix of hyperspace travel and of regular space travel. And that little swirly, white shape underneath the title text? Is the ship! Hee! Amazing!

We're Not Yet
A Fanmix for "Corner of No and Where"
GENERATOR ^ FIRST FLOOR (FREELANCE WHALES)
‘Andy’ is a Living Ship. It is the only Living Ship on record. Not even the Ship fully knows the when or where it came about.
we get up early, just to start cranking the generator / our limbs have been asleep, we need to get the blood back in ‘em we’re finding every day, several ways that we could be friends
DOWN TO THE CEMETERY (KID SAM)"[...] I’m too fucking young and too fucking beautiful to die from hypothermia."
they're diggin' our graves, but while they work / let's laugh at them, ‘cause all of it is so absurd / let's go dancin' there, above the dead / oh, let's celebrate that we're not yet
I’LL BELIEVE IN ANYTHING (HER SPACE HOLIDAY)That bit of logic aside, Matt’s fairly certain that he’s Andy’s favorite pilot ever.
every person no matter how big or tough they are / should always have a partner
I KNOW WHAT I AM (BAND OF SKULLS)Matt smiles up at him. "Anyway, right. I’m Matt Mixon, pilot and all around awesome dude."
I got the time but the time don't pay / it's alright it's ok / I know what I am / they know what they are / so let me be
DOESN’T MATTER MUCH (BLOOD RED SHOES)"Attention passengers and crew of Fuck City. The lovely Mr. Stump, our dear, dear scientist, has given us our coordinates," Matt says.
have it your way, we'll have the answers in a week / we'll take some measurements and work it out with the sums[...] you're searching for something so invisible, raise your glasses to cheer for what you're not
SIRENS IN THE DEEP SEA (LONGWAVE)"You're talking to a Living Ship, Mixon," Andy says. "Yeah," Ryan agrees. "Insane is sort of the point, isn’t it."
I've been swimming in the deep sea / sirens come up to greet me / but it's not so good to be / the only one that can / the lonely once again
SQUEALING PIGS (ADMIRAL FALLOW)Joe laughs some more. “Yeah. That’s it. Have you ever thought about not being a ship?”
it's that sinking feeling of being alone / and it's the way it makes you screech / and pulls the skin off your bones / and I can't help but think, as I pick my mouth off the floor; / will you still know me in a year?
THE DESERT IS ON FIRE (MURDER BY DEATH)This is Andy's 'you’re fucking with me and my crew and I'm going to fuck you up but good' face. Perfect. Just what they need is a homicidal ship with delusions of Space Piracy.
you think you've suffered well you ain't seen shit yet / the pain won't set in for a long, long time / I've fought off angels with my hands behind my back / I've set the heavens all on fire
CROCODILE (THIS TOWN NEEDS GUNS)And then they reach the light. Together they grasp and pull, leaving hyperspace like it's easier than breathing.
god knows why we’re in love / when you throw your temper out of doors / when you throw your temper out of doors / that I cannot follow through / and yet / you grow ever near
WISDOM (MOTHER MOTHER)"Andy’s swearing because he’s a real boy now."
take off my clothes / and I feel useless don't think I know / how to do this / once I was told / but I liked to fidget / and miss out on good advice
REMEDY (CROOKERS FT. MIIKE SNOW)“And he’d always hoped that these other deities would figure out they were wrong and let him come home.”
here’s to living long enough to be forgiven / for the bones I broke I had to make a livingand you won't back down from anything in search of a remedy
THE CLAP (THAO WITH THE GET DOWN STAY DOWN)“We have faced down worse than the Barataria Familys: you do not frighten us. And you will not win.”
if this is how you want it / okay, okay
UNDERNEATH IT ALL (SCALA & KOLACNY BROTHERS)Human emotions are a very confusing concept without having to deal with them outside of the abstract. Andy is quite ready to never go through that again.
after all I've tried / you are still insideall I do / I can still feel you / you remainI am stained
IN A DREAM (SKYBOX)Andy hadn’t been able to do shit until he touched Matt. Nothing.
I could unravel at the seams / you'll stitch me up someday, my secret's lost / I'm a body without a face [...] you fucked with the sunshine / you left it in the water, oh my god / I think I'm gonna die
EVERYBODY, COME OUTSIDE! (POMEGRANATES)“ [...] we’d be part of the rebels trying to overthrow the harsh rule of the Familys and yadda yadda yadda.”
out of your gates, out of your foxholes / the time is now, it's time to rebuild / the future calls / there's more to home than walls / and when you look up through the trees / and see the sun, it brings you to your knees
MUSCLE ‘N’ FLOW (MENOMENA)“But you weren’t destroyed. And it isn’t like being human is all that bad. We’re all doing just fine with it, honestly.”
there's so much more / left to do / well, I'm not young / but I'm not through / oh, in the evening / I stumble / my way towards another day / we struggle
DAISY (FANG ISLAND)But he closes his eyes and focuses his hearing on the steady rhythm of Matt’s heartbeat. Sleep comes quickly after that.
ooh that’s alright / hey, that’s to say / I, that’s to be / you, that’s to see / me
(BONUS) BONES OF A RABBIT (YOUNG HERETICS)“ [...] but mostly they’re just pissed that he hasn’t come crawling back to them begging to be let back in.”
you have conquered cities / and torched the mighty sea / you may keep yourself afloat but you cannot outswim me you play with the wolves, / but you sleep with the bones of the rabbit
Appendix
Oh, I absolutely loved this story - the banter between Matt and Andy, the great lines that everyone has. All the dialogue made me gleeful! I really got a kick out of observing its evolution, the way the tone of the story (and thus the mix) changed as scenes were fleshed out.
I found making this mix a challenge, because I was torn between following the fun style of writing, or exploring the emotions that work in the background. I tried to imagine this Andy listening to tweepop and the outcome was just not pleasant, so in the end I went for the latter. The songs then have a rockier feel, while I hope still keeping the bounce of the story.
The title of this mix “We’re Not Yet” comes from the second song, “Down to the Cemetery” by Kid Sam. I chose the song to represent Fuck City, and all their adventures and dangers and glee. The full phrase is “let's go dancin' there, above the dead / oh, let's celebrate that we're not yet.” While meaning that they’re not yet dead, I liked the idea of using it to imply Matt/Andy not yet occurring, and that this AU is not yet done. :)
I anchored the mix on Andy, with bits of Mixon since he is such a strong influence. Hopefully I captured some of his emotional arc. I added a bonus song about just how mad Pete, Patrick and Joe were, but I couldn’t find the perfect song unfortunately for Stu always thinking he’s right, but I definitely did try!
This mix also contains 2 cover songs: “I’ll Believe in Anything” is a cover of Wolf Parade by Her Space Holiday, and the choir version of NIN’s “Underneath It All” is by Scala & Kolacny Brothers. “I’ll Believe in Anything” has the spoken word at the start and end that I just found utterly charming, and reminiscent of Andy & Mixon protecting each other. I have an absolute love of cover songs so I knew I’d be trying to sneak one in here somehow, but “Underneath It All” actually crept in on its own. The echoes in the creepy (to me) singing, and made me think of the buzzing that is mentioned during Andy’s transition.
Overall, I think my weakest song choice was “Squealing Pigs” by Admiral Fallow; while I meant for it to be about how all the characters are maturing and wanting family (not to be alone), I don’t know how much of that really got across - I think I’m cheating by explaining it here! While I hope my strongest song choice is “We’re Not Yet” considering I based the mix off of it, I am actually really pleased with “Daisy” by Fang Island. While mostly instrumental, I think it has the perfect bombastic note to officially end the mix. And I’ll end my words here!
I hope you’ve enjoyed the mix as a whole, or at least grabbed a couple of songs you liked. :)
squigglepie Please leave
