Restaurant Review - Fried Green Tomatoes

Fried Green Tomatoes
1175 Woods Crossing Rd
Greenville, SC 29607

I ate there for the first time yesterday. Fried Green Tomatoes is a traditional, somewhat more upscale meat and three so I was hoping for some good home cooked food. I ordered one of the daily specials, Chicken Cordon Bleu with two sides, green bean casserole and of course, fried green tomatoes. The green bean casserole was better than the ordinary. They actually deep fry their own onions for this. (not the ones out of the can) With a name like "Fried Green Tomatoes" I just had to try the dish the restaurant was named for. Frankly, I was expecting more. They were fried well. The batter was crisp, the tomatoe juicy, but it was bland. No salt, pepper or a hint of flavor to be found. I also had high expectations for the Chicken Cordon Bleu and was let down. The chicken was over fried to the point of being hard and very dry. If I cut into the center and thickest part of the chicken it was eatable, but the ham inside was flavorless and barely gave the meat enough moisture for me to eat it without my mouth feeling like I was chewing sawdust.

Doc ordered Shepherds Pie which I tasted. While i can't vouch for the rest of his meal, the shepherds pie was pretty good. The best part of the meal by far were the biscuits. Light, fluffy and delicious served with plenty of butter and the offer of jelly. The service was also good and the wait staff was friendly.

The cost of lunch for two people was around $20.

I'd have to give Fried Green Tomatoes a Meh rating. I'd be willing to give them another shot, but I don't think it will be anytime soon.
