I've not posted to my journal in quite a while. Mostly due to facebook and having another outlet to post about myself. I have had a lot of requests recently for some of my best recipes. I've also had an idea to give my opinions on restaurants in my area. I've decided to combine these two and change the focus of my Live Journal. I'll be posting recipes and tips to cooking as well as giving restaurant reviews in the Greenville/Spartanburg area of South Carolina.
With that said, here is my first recipe submission followed by a restaurant review.
Chicken con Crema
1.5 lbs Chicken Breast Cut into strips
2 tbs or one packet of Taco seasoning
1/2 cup water
1 tsp fresh garlic (chopped)
1/4 cup sour cream
1/2 lb monterey jack cheese (shredded)
6 soft taco shells
Brown chicken in a little olive oil until cooked through and golden brown. Sprinkle with taco seasoning and add garlic and water. Simmer until sauce thickens. Remove from heat and add in sour cream. Stir thoroughly and serve inside taco shells with lots of cheese.
Restaurant Review
Wasabi
1529 John B White Sr Boulevard
Spartanburg, SC 29301
First, do not confuse this Wasabi with others in Greenville by the same name. This is locally owned and operated by Katsu and his lovely, always cheerful wife Jing.
You will not a better Japanese restaurant anywhere in the upstate. Not only do they have the freshest, best tasting sushi I've ever had, they also have a regular cooked menu that is full of wonderful choices like Yaki-niku (teriyaki beef) and Chicken Katsu (deep fried chicken breast with Katsu's own special sauce).
From the outside, Wasabi is in a strip mall and does not appear like anything "special." Once inside however, it gives an authentic Japanese feel, not to be confused with the over commercialized poor imitations you will find at many Japanese steak houses and sushi bars. Jing is almost always at the front door ready to greet guests with a smile and a laugh. You can choose to sit at the bar and watch Katsu up close as he creates his sushi art or choose a booth or table.
Appetizers include choices like Yaki-Niku lettuce wraps, miso soup, edamame, and steamed dumplings. I've never had any of them that I didn't enjoy.
Hot menu items are wide and varied and have something for every taste. My favorites are the Chicken Katsu and the Sweet Spicey chicken strips. Bento boxes are great for first time sushi eaters as they offer bentos with a mixture of hot cooked food and sushi.
Which brings me to the Sushi portion of this review. Sushi is separated on the menu by style as well of raw and cooked. Easy for a first timer to navigate and understand. The fish used for the sushi is fresh daily and put together in a very creative way. Super white tuna and yellowtail are great raw choices if you have never tried sushi before. Cooked sushi choices include everything from the well known California Roll to their own Rock'n Roll and Deep Fried California Roll. The Spider Roll and Shrimp Tempura rolls are also excellent choices for a sushi noob.
Overall, Wasabi offers an awesome dining experience. I highly recommend this restaurant. Even if you have never tried sushi before, or never tried sushi you liked before, you will find something at Wasabi that you will love.
