So, back to reality. I am so tired from the past few days I can't even think straight so I don't really know what I'm doing online. Anyways, I had a good trip with my mom...many "adventures" (which is just a fancy word for trying to find something and getting completely and utterly lost!). We left...when was it...I barely remember...Sunday afternoon! because my mom was dawdling. So, we left at 1:00 and got to Orono around 7:00, checked out Orono and went out to eat at Uno's in Bangor...a "city" in Maine which is pretty much the size of Manchester but still good...besides, some of the restaurants in Bangor even accept Black Bear Bucks! The next day we got up around 6 and headed out to the open house where we heard the pep band play and saw the dance team perform (amazing! even for being so early!) and took a tour of the Honors College. If I go to UMO, I am definitely signing up for the Honors College just because of the special treatment lol. No, really, the people at UMO are so friendly and in the Honors College, I'd get individual attention from professors and take some really interesting courses aside from my immense amounts of science. Before the tour, we went to Aubert Hall where Dr. Ellis explained how the Marine Sciences programs works and what to expect. The research the professors are doing at UMO is astounding! I actually got so curious and interested it was unbelievable...made me really want to be a part of it...of course, I'm still not sure since I'm not really a science geek...then again, marine bio can be applied to a ridiculous amount of careers...so once I figure out what I want specifically, I'll double major or minor in something else. The next day, I sat in on an upper level Oceanography class and watched everyone work on their projects. Got some good info on classes and the professors and then headed over to the Aquaculture Research Center where the girl I was with worked. The ARC was so amazing! All of these tropical fish being bred to be sold in pet stores in an effort to reduce the amount of fishing in the tropics...this grad student, Soren, designed the center for his grad project and now makes a profit off of it! There were hundreds of itty bitty clownfish zooming around...so cute! So, in the long and short of it, I like what UMO has to offer...I hate that it's 6 hours away but either way, I won't be coming home that often anyways, and there are plenty of things to do in Orono...hockey games, going to a show at the Maine Center for the Arts, and eating out downtown or in Bangor. Everyone in downeast Maine goes out of there way to be friendly and personable. I just love their attitudes...it reminds me of the South...and although I don't necessarily enjoy freezing, I can find a way to make it work. So, I'm really tired...have to work on two major projects tomorrow...yippee! I'll talk about UNE later...
Okay, so UNE...after driving three hours down to Saco after the class and such on Tuesday, and being stalked by a man in a pirate hat, we made it to the hotel. By the way, the man in the pirate hat...we were driving on the highway and came to the back of this car in which a guy was wearing a pirate hat and another was wearing a hat with cow print. So, we continue along and pass him and my mom says, after glancing into her mirror, "Did you see the pirate in back of us?" lol. They suddenly come up to our side, and without obviously staring laughed at the hat. Then, the guy in the pirate hat randomly turns around and stares at us! We started laughing hysterically, "How did he know we were talking about him?" Laughed for a good long five minutes haha. Anyways, we got completely lost trying to find our way around Biddeford what with all the streets that have two or more route numbers on them. Take 9/208/111...what??? Yup, so we were supposed to meet up with a girl at UNE after we had checked out Old Orchard Beach and gone to eat at their new Olive Garden but couldn't find the Olive Garden to save our lives and called and told her that we couldn't meet with her. We actually got all the way to UNE by some chance and got directions to the Olive Garden at a service station, but being so frustrated my mom turned around and got us to the Olive Garden after many wrong turns. I had some comfort food...chicken alfredo!...after all the stress. The next day...Wednesday...I went to class with a girl named Ashley and met some other students. Went to O. Chem and English. The O. Chem teacher was crazy and hilarious exclaiming that her strange behavior was due to an excess of coffee..."Where does the hydrogen want to go? It wants to go on the bottom...Yeah baby! You look good (as she talks to the molecule model)" Yes, she reminded me of Mrs. Maxwell. For being such an infamous class, it really didn't seem that bad even though I didn't know the terms like chemoselective, is it regioselective? I was proud of myself for knowing what a catalyst was lol. English was uneventful. The professor was a complete fruitcake...we were discussing the Ramayana and Hinduism...kind of put me to sleep. We hecked out the awesome suites and then had some lunch...not very good...although the salad and the brownie were awesome...then, we met with a professor at the Marine Sciences building. She was very friendly and opened me up to some interesting ideas...like double majoring or minoring to find your right niche in the field...pretty cool...she was an awkward scientist but very nice indeed. We saw their small Aqualculture center and looked at the seals...so adorable! That was the end of the trip...excuse all of my extended thoughts. There's just so much whirling around in my head that it's difficult to put anything into a complete thought. So UNE had amazing facilities, some nice people, and cool places to travel to-Old Port, Boston, Saco, Kennebunk...but it was exactly like CHS. The same class sizes...the same types of people that I've been with...the same competition because all of the students are motivated! Not that that's a bad thing, but to stand out at UNE, you really have to constantly be proving yourself and the professors there expect you to take the initiative in everything..like I've been doing for the past four years...I just think that I want a change from my norm. UNE is beautiful but the professors are in their ivory towers, not willing to even talk to me because they can fill their seats without getting to know YOU. That actually pisses me off intensely. It's nice that you're willing to help the actual students but before I even get there, they can't take five minutes out of their day to answer some of my questions. Well excuse me! I don't take that crap thank you very much. So, in essence...the people there came off as being snobby in one way or another and I don't think that I want to be a part of that besides the fact that being there twice...I already know my way around campus...a bit too small for me. And a sidenote, the guys at UMO are gorgeous! for the most part. :)
