My friend Leah and her husband just moved a month ago and instead of painting their walls at their new place, they bought board cloth, soaked it in liquid starch and stuck the cloth to the wall like wallpaper. When it dries, it acts like a magnet and won't come off the wall until you peel it off. It's perfect for renters because after you peel it off, you wipe the wall down to get the starch off and the wall is as good as new.
So I just finished doing that to one wall of our apartment and it looks great. I would suggest getting someone to help you because it was hard sometimes to get the larger pieces to stay without another set of hands.
Here's what to do:
*buy board cloth, any color, or any other lightweight cotton cloth
*buy liquid starch and pour it into a bucket
*measure and cut cloth (it's easier to work with medium sized pieces; you can barely see the seams when it's fully dried)
*fully saturate cloth piece in starch, wring out and then spread cloth across wall (if cloth is too big, it may not cling right away because of the weight - use nails or push pins in the corners to keep it up until it dries)
It will dry within a couple of hours. To remove, you can simply peel it off (you may need to wet it first) and wash the cloth to reuse. You'll also need to use a wet sponge to wipe off the liquid starch from the walls.
