I had a meeting at the Portland Veteran's Hospital this past week. I worked there for 9 months several years ago and am fairly familiar with the facility. This was the first time I've been to the VA in months and I never would have anticipated my reaction upon entering the lobby. I had a near panic attack just walking in the door. All I could think about was the loss of my dad and how likely it was that people in the lobby were experiencing the loss of a family member. By the time I made it to my meeting I was fighting tears. Thankfully once I was removed from patients and their families the panic ebbed. Never in a million years would I have expected to have had a reaction like that just walking into the VA. Leaving wasn't as bad as entering and I'll bet that my next trip will not be as traumatic. Odd how the brain works.
