Legend of Korra

I am absolutely LOVING the new Avatar series, The Legend of Korra!

I pretty much like all the characters, and as usual the creators are playing the fandom like puppets when it comes to shipping. Personally I'm rooting for Korra/Mako since A.) canon seems to be leaning that way, and B.) I think they might finally throw a bone to the foaming-at-the-mouth Zutara shippers by pairing up a male fire bender with a female member of a water tribe. We'll see, though. I'm not emotionally invested in any pairing. I like all four of the characters in the love...square? Rectangle? So however the shipping resolves itself will be fine with me.

Oh, and all these weeks later I still get the giggles when I think about the first episode, when one of Katara's grandchildren asked her about whatever happened to Zuko's mom. I laughed until I absolutely howled the first time I heard that. I had to pause the episode and everything. The writers are EVIL! EVIL, I TELL YOU! Heehee...

The 1920s/'30s-esque vibe of the series is fun, and it's interesting to see how benders clash with the more modern world.

The million dollar question, is of course: who is Amon? We've now seen him on screen with both Tarrlok and Asami's dad, both of whom I had seen suggested as candidates (and neither of whom did I personally think was a possiblity, based on body types.) Of course it's possible that he's a completely new character with no ties to the previous generation, but then why keep his identity a secret? Oh, the possibilities... My crack theory is that he's Azula's son, just because, hey, that would be awesome and insanity can be hereditary. XD

But then, I spent the first five episodes or so trying to figure out who everyone's ancestors were. Of course not everyone is a descendant of someone from the first series, because that would be silly and limiting, but I was still tempted to imagine everyone's family trees. (Who is Lin's dad, anyway? Inquiring minds want to know!)

Mako and Tarrlok both ping my fangirl radar, but neither as strongly as Zuko did. Still, they're fun to watch.

Lin is awesome and badass. All through this most recent episode I had a strong foreshadowing vibe that she was in self-sacrifice mode, and I was sorry to be proven right. Still, are we absolutely positive that Amon's ability to remove someone's bending is truly permanent? Or does it just block it for awhile, and people get so despondent that they never try to use their abilities in a couple weeks, or something? Wishful thinking, I suppose, but I don't want to think that we've seen the last of Lin's ass kicking metalbending.

As for the golden-eyed fire bender commander we saw at the very end of the episode...OMG SQUEE! ZUKO SPAWN!!! AND HE'S NAMED AFTER IROH! OMG! *melt* I was bouncing up and down and squeeing IRL when I heard his name. It almost sounds like he's voiced by the same guy who did Zuko, but it was hard to tell with so little dialog. Regardless, it makes me very very happy! *Snoopy dance*
[Edited to add: Okay, according to an interview I read with the writers, Iroh is Zuko's grandson, and he does have the same voice artist. Cool beans!]
