Um, no.

We've been getting calls from phone number with a Madison area code, at least once a day for the last few weeks. They never leave a message so when they called a little while ago I just gave up and answered it to see what they wanted. I figured it was political, but when they didn't stop after the election I got curious.

The lady on the other end sounded very young, maybe college age, and she read her script so fast I could hardly understand most of what she said. She kept calling me Katherine, as I'm sure there are blanks in her script for [PERSON'S NAME HERE] to make it seem less like a script. Basically, she was looking for support for Congressman Ron Kind.

HER: Can we count on you to help out Congressman Ron Kind with a $100 donation?
ME: If I had $100 to blow I wouldn't spend it on a political donation, but good luck with that.

I hung up, and hopefully they'll take the hint and stop calling.

Seriously, people. How many people are going to answer their phone, listen to some girl breathlessly speed through a prepared script, and then hand over one hundred dollars? It seems like a gigantic waste of time. Not to mention annoying.

Now, I volunteered with the Kerry campaign and I did my share of annoying political phone calls, but they were never to ask for money, only votes. And although I did have a script to go by, I tried my hardest to make it sound natural, and I certainly didn't insert the person's name into every sentence to be fake-friendly. Ugh. So while I have a certain amount of sympathy toward people who have to make those calls, this girl on the phone irritated the crap out of me.

rants and complaints, politics
