Another fishy loss

One of my "baby" goldfish, Freddie, passed away this morning.

He had never thrived and grown quite like Polly has. Even though they were about the same size when I got them, Polly's half again the size Freddie was. He had several illnesses over the two years I had him, sitting on the bottom of the tank for a couple of days, then springing back. He got sick again a couple days ago, and yesterday I put him in the quarantine tank so he could get some rest. Little Louie was being a pest, bothering him and nipping his tail as he tried to rest on the gravel. Freddie was very quiet last night and gone this morning.

I'm very sad; he was a very cute, pretty little fish, and still so young! Of the four "baby" goldfish I've got in the last two years, I've now lost two (Shelley being the other one). He had a great life, even if it was way too short: the best of everything, a huge (to him) tank, fishy friends, quality food, and lots of love.

Polly and Louie seem to be doing great, though. Louie's still so tiny it's hard to tell how he's going to do in the long term, but Polly is thriving.

Meanwhile, Benny's doing okay on his own. I'm still looking for a new tankmate for him, but so far I've struck out every place I've tried. I even contemplated one of the more expensive fish from the Goldfish Connection, but their last auction didn't have anything that really grabbed me. It shouldn't be THAT hard to find a sarasa (reddish-orange-and-white) fantail that's at least four inches long! The local fish stores should have a fresh batch of fish tomorrow. If I don't have any luck then, we might go to the Twin Cities on Sunday to look at the stores there.
I definitely need a new fish to be with Benny. I don't have any immediate plans to add a third little one to Polly and Louie's tank, but then I didn't plan to get Louie, either, so... We'll see what swims my way.

So yeah, a month ago I had five goldfish. Now I have three. :\
