NEW BABIES!

After several days of anxious waiting, I finally have two new babies in my fishie family.

Introducing...

FREDDIE AND POLLY!

"Yeah, hi, nice to meet you...let us out of the bag now, please?"

Early this afternoon my mom and I went to the store where we'd gotten Benny, Fergie and Minnie. At first I wasn't super-impressed with the fish I saw, and there were two deceased ones in the baby fantail tank, but after closer inspection I noticed that none of the fish had any red or sore areas, and there was no sign of any fungal infection. The two dead ones most likely succumbed to shipping stress. The employee told me they hadn't had any health problems with the fish in that tank recently, and that this shipment came in Wednesday. They were closed yesterday for Thanksgiving, so today was the first day this batch was for sale. The vast majority of the fish in the tank (all fantails and moors) were very active and healthy-looking.

There was only one with any significant white coloration, so she was automatically coming home with us. ;) It took me awhile to narrow it down from there, but finally I picked out a gold fantail who had nice, deep coloration, and a very long tail. In fact, his tail reminds me of the late, great Sammy's, being mostly fused on the top. Breeders and goldfish show professionals may not like the "tripod" tail, but I think they're pretty.
I had the name Polly picked out for the girl (genders assigned arbitrarily, since you really can't tell with carp), and after getting him home I decided to call the other one Freddie.

Here they are still in the bag from the store, floating in the tank until the temperature equalizied.

Here's the whole tank. (Excuse the glare from the window.) Virtually everything in there is brand-new. The little white ceramic shark is the only hand-me-down from previous tanks.

They move around constantly, so it's very hard to get clear photos.

Here they're admiring their reflections, and you can see Polly's markings a bit better.

Freddie says "HARR matey! I'm a pirate carrrrrrp!" (If I get a thing to split the air line tubing I could have bubbles coming out of the cannon. For now, it's just cute the way it is.)

I've been watching them all afternoon. My face hurts from grinning and giggling so much. They're so cute I can't stand it! SQUEE!
They seem to like each other quite well, staying close together most of the time, and the one will copy what the other is doing.
They're so tiny, the bubble curtain ls like a hurricane-force gale, but Polly especially seems to like riding the current up and down. They've been tasting everything from the fake plants to shiny rocks, and just exploring their entire world. It took them awhile to realize how big the tank is, and how far up and side-to-side they can go.
They swim so goofily compared to grown-up goldfish. They wiggle so hard to get places that Benny and Minnie can just glide to!
At first they wanted to go up and down over and over, and now they're going the long way, back and forth, enjoying all that room.

I can't wait to see how they eat tonight. I had to buy flakes and tiny pellets for them, since there's so way they can eat the big food that Benny and Minnie eat. Polly's already pooped twice...filthy carp. ;D

I was also highly amused and delighted to see that these guys to the "ferris wheel" maneuver, which my first set of babies (Tony, Mellie and Addy) did all those years ago. SO CUTE!!!

The pictures don't do them justice, they're so tiny! They could both fit in the palm of my hand with plenty of room to spare. They can't be more than an inch and a half long, counting tails. They cost $1.59 apiece, making them the cheapest goldfish I've ever bought. Even Sammy, Tony and Mellie were $1.99. Heehee...

I was going to play WoW this afternoon but I can't stop watching my new babies. Nothing I could get for Christmas could make me happier than these two little guys have.
Here's hoping they have long, healthy lives with me.

And did I mention how INCREDIBLY CUTE they are? XD
