Last night Prince, the betta in my bedroom, was acting totally normal and ate his supper like always.
This morning he was lying on his side on the bottom of the tank, and an hour later he was gone.
It's a giant shock, considering how fast it went, but not completely unexpected considering how old he was. It was two years ago in February that I got him, and he's outlived both Ricky, the betta I got the same day, and Frosty, who I got after Ricky died.
He's had a raggedy tail and faded colors for a long time, and he hasn't been as active and spry as in his youth.
He was still very friendly, though, and believe it or not I had to break up a medium-sized bubble nest in order to net him out of the tank. He lived his life to the fullest right until the end, and I'm glad he didn't have to linger and suffer. But I'll miss him terribly. He was truly a Prince among bettas, the best, friendliest, sweetest, and longest-lived betta splendens I've had the honor of sharing my life with.
