SYLVIA!!! (War of the Worlds movie)

Just got back from seeing the new War of the Worlds movie. It was awesome!
I expected to like it less than I did because I'm such a huge fan of the 1953 version, but it was excellent despite the updates.

Cut for WotW spoilers (both 1953 and 2005 versions) )

Hrm. Sounds neat. Might have to check it out. Cruise's antics had effectively dissuaded me, but based on this well-thought-out review from someone with more enthusiasm for the canon than even me, well, it might be worth it.

You'd probably like the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen second volume then -- the books really don't deserve to be associated with the movie. Volume one is slightly reminiscent of the plot of the first movie (if you squint), but volume two merges the classic (anti-)heroes like Hyde, Nemo, Quartermain et al. with the Martian invasion. Quite nicely done, very much in the spirit of the original text....

I never noticed that about the ex-wife's parents being Clayton and Sylvia from the '53 version. That is very cool. :) I feel the same way about the aliens and how they looked. A near ripoff from the ID4 aliens, but I did find it amusing that they almost looked like smaller versions of the tripods. One issue I had was that the aliens in Wells' novel had issues moving around in Earth's gravity, but in both movies they had no issues moving around. I guess that works better for a movie though. It was cool even if gross that they kept the blood sucking in the new movie from the book though. In the book the blood was used to transfuse into the Martians themselves for nurishment since they have no digestive systems. Both are pretty gross though and not a good way for anyone to go ( ... )

Ah yes, that's what the Wells aliens did with the blood! I couldn't remember what it was, but I knew it was different from the movie's idea. I'll have to re-read that novel after the Pottermania dies down in a few weeks. ;)
