Okay, so I had planned on re-reading the first five Harry Potter books before the sixth one comes out (41-days-from-now-but-who's-counting) but I keep getting distracted by shiny objects (and manga, and crossword puzzles, and computer games, and...yeah, you get the idea) so I may not be able to get through them all. I thought about that, too, while watching the third movie again. I can't wait to find out about that!

When Fred and George gave it to Harry in the third book, they do say, "When we were innocent first years..." - they got in trouble in Filch's office, blew up a dungbomb, and grabbed the first thing they could out of Filch's "Confiscated" cabinet. But yeah, it's still a mystery how they learned the password. But remember how the map talked to Snape? Maybe it talked with Fred and George a bit, and whatever spirit of the Marauders that's in the parchment recognized a kindred spirit, and thus gave the password.
