I'm sending out help yelps, and you're at the head of the line. (I also asked Bogdan if he could rec a real-live FA mod.)
I seem to have lost my ability to post on Fictionalley in a readable. form. You probably know the difficulties I had w/ the html-ing on Ch 21. I got some help, and was able to resubmit, and get those corrected.
I'm completely stumped for Ch 22. None of the earlier settings held. And by going through the procedures that corrected Ch 21, this twice, I was only able to correct the problem w/ quotation marks. It didn't correct apostrophes, elipses & dashes. I've appealed to unrequitedangst, who helped me through the first time. But if that doesn't work -- and I've spent hours on it -- I'm wondering if I can ask a favor?
If I submit a .txt file to you, w/ my html-ing instructions all in place, could you get it to fictionalley in a form w/o the garbage? The new FA system and my Word/html system seem completely incompatible.
Sorry, but my frustration level has reached about as high as it can, and I truly am swamped with work now -- which is a good thing. But it means that, for the foreseeable future, I'll have little time for lj or anything not work or family or writing.
Of course Avus. I'll try to help. I've never submitted anything to any web site, but if you detail the procedure one needs to follow, I'll have a go as soon as I receive the file.
Just out of interest, let me know also what version of Word you are using - I have both Office 98 on my PC and Office 2000 on my Mac, so something should work.
If it does work, do you want me to re-submit chapter 21 for you? Or can't you submit/amend a previous chapter?
Get it to me at my email address: kate.morrissey@which.net
Fingers crossed. By the way, I'm pretty good at Word - given courses on it in the past, and I'm an 80 wpm typist, so if you ever need any help with the typing of your chapters, just let me know. I would be more than happy to take on the tedious task of preparing the chapters for the web once I know how to do it.
From what I can determine, it's not the actual submission that's difficult. That's just cut&paste or downloading. It's getting my Word-based, Notepad-based html-ing to come out w/o garbage characters, and so unreadable. *sigh*
I have Word 97, which should be compatible. I wonder if my Word is so old that what it does doesn't work w/ the new FA system?
Anyway, I'm going to give it one more try, though that may wait until after my wife & I get back from our long weekend in the Rockies -- we are SOOO ready for this. Work is finally not only up to speed, but sometimes a bit beyond speed, which is good. I'm farther than I'd hoped to be in 6 mos to a yr. But that means maintaining it. And I'm forced -- a good thing -- to rethink my work on attachment/bonding b/c of the client base that's coming my way. (That's about all I've been posting on lj -- the McKeon stuff.)
So, nattering on. You don't need to resubmit my Ch 21. I think that's all right; at least it was when I checked it a few days ago. But I do appreciate your offer, as I do of your offer to type. Actually, here, we may be fairly closely matched. I type about 80 wpm, too -- that piano background helped, as well as grad school & typing my notes during session, sometimes almost transcribing what my clients say.
Ah, nattering on again.
You are so very good & kind & generous in your offers,
Just a thought - have you tried copying and pasting the Word document (complete with html tags) into wordpad? That is just a simple text editing tool which has none of MSWord's sophistication (and subsequent problems) I don't know how PC literate you are, so don't take offence if I assume you might not know about Wordpad. You can find it in the Start Menu > Programs > Accessories.
And you can save from there into rich text format too.
Might be worth a shot.
Have a nice weekend. BTW, yes, my camera worked and I have had two FREE video conferences with my daughter since I got back. Also brought back a raw throat which is still not best so have been off sick for a few days this week. Really glad your work is picking up. And I meant, sincerely, my offer to help format your chapters if you have no time. Anything to keep you posting, old friend.
I copy the basic Word document to notepad (I don't think I have something called "wordpad.), then I do my html-ing in that program. When I get done, I use the "save as" function, and save it as .html. I've tried using the simple "save" function, and that doesn't seem to work -- not sure why. When I edit my html-ing, I always do as you suggest: I copy the .html into notepad, and work from there. I take no offense at your explicit directions. What you're saying is precisely as I get into notepad, and I needed to be guided that exactly. I have no notion as to what "rich text format" means. Sorry.
I've wondered if I should just save my notepad html-ing as .txt, and submit that to FA, letting them do whatever they do to make is posting ready. (I'd check my html-ing out by opening it up in Word, just to be safe, but that's just an extra cut&paste, and a "save as" to my .html.) I guess I'm a bit spooked, since they've posted garbage, and I'm worried that that's what would come out. Am I being oversensitive?
Thank you so much for your offer. I may, sometime, take you up on that. I really am trying to get some serious brain-time to re-think bonding/attachment in how I explain it and help heal kids & families with serious bonding problems. I'm getting closer, but that, plus writing, is absorbing most of my time -- not to mention family. And, I fear, I'm getting old enough not to have my brain left for brain-time at the end of what are now fairly long & involved days. For example, today had 2 intakes, one involving an person at serious risk of death, the other a young child w/ a parent w/ untreatable mental illness. Then a young man who has never been loved, the parents of a disabled child who is dying, and a husband and wife, one with a serious brain injury and medical complications. Pretty typical. I just can't go home and work -- nothing left. But it's good work, satisfying work. Just that it doesn't leave much when I'm done.
I'm so pleased you have videoconferencing! Hope you get well soon.

If you can't, I will most certainly understand.
Is your computer camera working?
